US prosecutors are seeking criminal charges against Huawei for technology theft

Wednesday, January 16th, 2019

According to a report out of The Wall Street Journal this afternoon, US federal prosecutors are seeking to file criminal charges against Huawei for theft of trade secrets from several of the company's American business partners in recent years. The most well-known example under consideration by the Department of Justice, according to the Journal, is the infamous case of T-Mobile's "Tappy" smartphone testing robot. T-Mobile sued Huawei for theft of trade secrets after the latter's employees stole parts from Tappy and attempted unauthorized access to T-Mobile facilities to further spy on the robot's technology.

Honor View20: Ready to punch above its weight with an enticing blend of old and new

Sunday, January 13th, 2019

Coming off the back of a dark year for smartphone design, the View20 is a reason to be optimistic. Notched phones have never been aesthetically pleasing nor functionally ideal, but thankfully that design trend is on its way out. We’ve seen a number of novel attempts to produce bezel-free phones, including sliders and motorized pop-ups, but a few of the big players have decided there's another way.

Samsung's upcoming flagship Galaxy S10 series will most likely feature hole-punch cutouts in the screen — an Infinity-O display to use the Korean company's terminology — and there will also be handsets from Nokia, Motorola, and Huawei using similar panels.

DontKillMyApp.com shames OEMs that needlessly kill useful background processes to save battery life

Sunday, January 13th, 2019

The days when third-party battery-saving apps were necessary to hit a satisfactory number of hours off a single charge are long behind the vast majority of Android users, thanks to improvements like Doze and Adaptive Battery. But in some cases, this measure of progress has become something of a Pyrrhic victory, with useful background processes carelessly destroyed and developers taking the brunt of user ire. Well, the Urbandroid team — the gang behind apps Sleep As Android, Twilight, and others — doesn't plan on going quietly into the night.

The FTC antitrust suit against Qualcomm hinges on Huawei

Monday, January 7th, 2019

Qualcomm is currently embroiled in an antitrust suit brought against it by the US Federal Trade Commission, which alleges the prolific chipmaker is using its favorable position to force equipment manufacturers to pay unfairly high licensing fees. Huawei, currently facing its own difficulties with the US federal government, is the FTC's unlikely key witness.

Along with Lenovo, China-based Huawei provided testimony meant to illustrate that Qualcomm has repeatedly threatened to withhold chips from manufacturers who would refuse to renew technology licensing deals.

Friday, December 28th, 2018

The latest development in the ongoing trade war between China and the US could see Donald Trump sign an executive order that would block all US businesses from buying equipment made by ZTE and Huawei. The order would invoke a national emergency, thus giving Trump the power to implement the ban.

According to three separate sources, Reuters reports that the US Administration continues to suspect the two tech giants of spying on behalf of the Chinese government, which could lead to the executive order being finalized next month.

Huawei shipped over 200 million smartphones this year, despite growing government concern

Wednesday, December 26th, 2018

This year has been a tumultuous one for Huawei. The company launched one good smartphone after the other, whether on the low end of the spectrum with the Nova series, or in the high-end market with its P20 and Mate 20 series. It also faced stiff regulatory opposition and found itself caught in the midst of a political/economical war between the US and China. From seeing its deals to enter the US market vanish with AT&T and Verizon to having its CFO arrested in Canada, the rollercoaster of Huawei's 2018 hasn't slowed down.
