Huawei is reviving smartphone leather backs with stitching

Friday, September 14th, 2018

One day bootleg pants are all the rage, the next it's considered a faux-pas to wear one and everyone moves to skinny leg pants. A couple of years later, bootleg pants are back in style and you feel like you understand nothing about nothing because you just threw yours in the trash. Just like clothing fashion, smartphone design goes through cycles. A few years ago, the Note 3 started the trend of using faux-leather with stitching on the back and so followed the Note 3 Neo, Note 4, and Note Edge.

Android Oreo now rolling out to Honor 8 users in India — who’s next?

Tuesday, September 11th, 2018

Honor 8 users are on a bit of an emotional roller coaster when it comes to getting Android 8 Oreo. In January, they were told that the 2016 device would not receive Android Oreo at all, even though the Honor 8 Lite and Honor 8 Pro were getting the new OS version, due to "hardware and software limitations." That didn't really sit well with anyone, though, and a few months later the Honor 8 Android Oreo beta arrived in China, before rolling out to the public in July, alongside builds for a variety of other Honor and Huawei devices.

[Update: Huawei statement] UL Benchmarks delists several Huawei and Honor devices for cheating on 3DMark test

Friday, September 7th, 2018

We always say that benchmarks don't matter as much as the overall experience of using a phone, but they do still matter enough that device makers sometimes put a thumb on the scale to improve scores. A recent report from Anandtech accused Huawei of configuring phones to produce artificially high benchmarks. Now, the maker of 3DMark has banned several Huawei devices in response.

Huawei Mate 20 Lite is official, available September 5

Friday, August 31st, 2018

The Huawei Mate 20 Lite was leaked in graphic detail earlier this month, exposing a big battery, four cameras, and a notched display. Huawei officially unveiled the device today, confirming many of the previously rumored details — plus a buzzy and entirely unsurprising focus on AI.

The Mate 20 Lite is powered by Huawei's Kirin 710 chip, along with four gigs of RAM — not six, as previous leaks suggested. The battery is a little larger than we thought it'd be, though, at a hefty 3,750 mAh.

Huawei introduces the 7nm Kirin 980 SoC, promising big boosts to performance and AI

Friday, August 31st, 2018

At IFA, Huawei announced its new flagship system-on-chip, the Kirin 980. Following in the footsteps of its fantastic predecessor, the 980 is the first commerical 7nm SoC, meaning that Huawei beat Qualcomm to the punch. If you're a hardware nerd, the Kirin 980 will sound quite exciting. Huawei says that this 7nm TSMC process results in 20% more power and 40% more battery efficiency over 10nm processors (e.g.
