Google rolls out fix for setting alarms and reminders on Google Home speakers

Saturday, April 21st, 2018

Asking your Google Home smart speaker to set an alarm or reminder is a rudimentary use case for those devices. But it seems some users recently found that their Google Home failed to sound alarms and reminders that were set. Now Google is saying that a fix has been rolled out and those functions are working again.

A few users in the Google Home Help Forum brought up the issue, saying they used their voice to set alarms or reminders on their Google Home and received an audible confirmation.

Google Home now speaks Italian, indicating that it will soon be sold in Italy

Friday, March 16th, 2018

Currently, the only languages supported by Google Home are those for the countries where the smart speaker is officially available. However, Italian has been spotted as an option, meaning that Google should soon be bringing the Home and Home Mini to Italy very soon.

Italian is already supported by Assistant on phones, Actions on Google, and Allo, but not Home. First spotted by Italy-based site smartworld, this makes Italian the ninth available Assistant language for Google Home devices.

Google Home calling is now live in the UK

Wednesday, March 7th, 2018

You might think making phone calls with Google Home would be a basic function available from launch, but you'd be wrong. VoIP calling eventually came to users in the US and Canada last August, but it's eluded other regions until now. At Google's October 4th hardware last year the UK was promised similar functionality — due to go live later in the year. It's a bit late, but UK Google Home users are finally able to make hands-free calls as of today.

[Update: 1st gen Chromecast unsupported] The first Google Home visualization is live – see the weather on your Chromecast

Thursday, February 8th, 2018

We've been able to ask Google Assistant for information about the local weather for a long time, and your Chromecast's home screen has shown the current temperature along with a weather icon. If you wanted to check out your upcoming weather, the only option was to "OK Google" yourself a forecast while you sit and listen through it. Back at I/O, Google announced upcoming contextual visual responses for the Google Home/Assistant and Chromecast, and now at least one of the features they showed off here. You can now ask your Google Home to show you the weather on your Chromecast.

[Deal Alert] Check your email, Google is giving free audiobooks to some people with a Google Home

Saturday, February 3rd, 2018

If you own one of Google's Home devices, you might want to keep an eye on your email's inbox. Google is giving some people their choice of a free audiobook to celebrate the format's recent arrival on Google Play. Even better, it looks like Google is allowing the promo to be applied to pretty much any audiobook in its new library, meaning you can get an audiobook that would cost almost as much as your Home Mini did for free.

Some of the choices Google presents, but you can seemingly choose any book.

Google Home can now set alarms with music instead of that obnoxious beeping

Thursday, February 1st, 2018

The default alarm tone for the Google Home may leave a tiny bit to be desired, but thankfully Google has just introduced an alternative: you can now set your next alarm to play music instead. So the next time you need to set an alarm for an impromptu nap or that bird in the oven, you can be jerked back to awareness with something a bit more entertaining.

The new feature was documented by Google on a support page for the Google Home, and it works easily.

You can now control your Sonos speakers with Google Home through Yonomi

Sunday, January 14th, 2018

Sonos products are praised for a lot of good reasons, but integration with other smart home ecosystems isn't one of them. Until recently, you'd have had to use some separate hardware or scripts to control any Sonos speaker, but no longer. Google has added support for Yonomi to the Google Home and Google Assistant, and since Yonomi supports Sonos natively, that means that controlling your Sonos speakers with Google Home no longer requires a workaround.

Insteon products will now work with the Google Assistant

Monday, January 8th, 2018

There's a familiar refrain from the readers here at AP every time another smart home solution gets Assistant integration: what about Insteon? Though it might not be quite so well-known as other smart home hubs, Insteon's products have a loyal following. And now that last final complaint has been addressed, as the company has added Google Assistant support to its Insteon Hub.

Enabling the new feature is as simple as firing up the Google Home App and linking your Insteon account.

Ninety7 LOFT battery base review: A $50 way to move your Google Home around the house

Saturday, December 9th, 2017

Google has now released three versions of the Google Home, each with its own unique size and price point, but none of them are portable out of the box. Untether them from their power cords, and you'll be left with an interestingly-shaped paperweight (well, the Home Mini actually somewhat resembles one).

Those of you looking for a mobile Home have probably run into this: Ninety7's LOFT battery base for the original Google Home.
