Google hires David Feinberg to oversee all health projects

At any given time, Google always has overlapping projects and products, and that is especially true for the company's health initiatives. Google Fit tracks fitness and exercise, Digital Wellbeing on Android limits your smartphone usage, and so on. Google has now hired former Geisinger CEO David Feinberg to oversee all health initiatives at the company, including products still under development.

According to CNBC, Feinberg will report directly to Google's artificial intelligence head Jeff Dean, but will also work with CEO Sundar Pichai.

Social media is often considered a distraction, but based on the results of a recent study, that influence could have larger implications. According to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), frequent use of digital media, including social media, by adolescents could be associated with ADHD—though the causal direction of that relationship is undetermined. 

As is always the case with a new study like this, season both the original authors' statements and my summary with plenty of salt, but the results are compelling.

Nest reportedly interested in buying Nokia’s health division

Nearly one year ago, Nokia aquirred Withings, a French company selling smart health products. It was Nokia's first major dive into consumer electronics in years, HMD's Nokia-branded devices aside. The health division was put under strategic review in February, leaving its future uncertain. Now we know at least one company interested in buying it - Nest.

Nokia is now close to selling its Health division, with a number of companies bidding for ownership.

Update for Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro and Gear Fit2 improves how information is displayed

Samsung has announced an update for its Gear Fit2 and Gear Fit2 Pro smartwatches. The new features are designed to improve the display of data on the devices. New functions are also included, such as Weight Management and Fitness Program, previously only available on the Gear Sport.

By connecting your Gear Fit2 to the Samsung Health app on your phone, you're able you monitor exercise and food consumption throughout the day and handily display your stats on your wrist.

Fitbit announces Versa smartwatch and Ace kids wristband, adds female health tracking to the Fitbit app

Fitbit announced two brand-new products today, plus a much-requestion additional feature for the Fitbit app. The Fitbit Versa is the company's new flagship smartwatch, something of a replacement for the Ionic. The Ace wristband for kids is essentially a Fitbit Alta for children aged 8+. For the first time, with an update due in May 2018, the Fitbit app will offer female health features such as period tracking.

MediaTek announces Sensio 6-in-1 biosensor module for smartphones

MediaTek has just announced a new smartphone biosensor module that can monitor 6 different health metrics. In addition to being able to measure a user's heart rate — which can honestly be done on any smartphone with a rear camera and flash — the MediaTek Sensio MT6381 can track heart rate variability, blood pressure, peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2), electrocardiography (ECG), and photoplethysmography (PPG). MediaTek hopes that manufacturers will begin to integrate Sensio into their devices in the future.
