Don’t migrate to YouTube Music if you want to keep your Google Play Music child accounts

Monday, November 26th, 2018

Looking to migrate your Google Play Music subscription to YouTube Music? You may want to hold off if you have Kidz Bop listeners (read: children) linked to your account. Following your transition, those accounts will no longer be functional.

One particular Google Play Music user shared this peculiarity with us in an email. Following an upgrade to YouTube Music to include premium, ad-free YouTube with their subscription, the music app was subsequently blocked for their two children's accounts.

Google Play Music is down for some, thinks ‘too many devices’ are linked to affected accounts

Thursday, November 1st, 2018

We're currently getting tips reporting a bug that's causing Google Play Music to be unusable. "Too many devices used with music library" is the message users are getting, regardless of how many they actually have linked in their account.

This isn't a new issue, with complaints going back as far as June on the Google Play support pages, but there appears to be a new outbreak of affected accounts in the last two hours, in addition to those who have written to us about it.

Thursday, October 4th, 2018

A few days ago, the Google Maps team announced a host of changes to its app, starting with a new Commute tab that groups driving and transit directions together, as well as a new media player integration while navigating. The changes have begun showing up now via a server-side update. We've spotted both features on Google Maps 9.88 beta, though it's possible you might see them on older versions of the app too.

Google posts guide to fix overlapping YouTube and Play Music subscriptions

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018

It's been a volatile time for Google's streaming services. YouTube Red was rebranded as YouTube Premium in May and YouTube Music Premium was launched, which lacked some features found on Google Play Music. The product team held an AMA with to calm some of the anger behind it all. Amid the confusion, it’s possible users might have subscribed to memberships with the same services. To help customers sort out their subscription mess and save some money, Google posted a YouTube Help document detailing the various feature sets and steps to take for remedying duplicate music accounts.

Monday, October 1st, 2018

In early September, we spotted Google Maps' new Commute tab — a section that takes over from the Driving and Transit tabs to provide a more robust view of your daily commute to work or school. That change is now rolling out globally on Android and iOS, along with several other updates to make routine travel easier, including in-app controls for three of the most popular music streaming apps — Spotify, Apple Music, and Google Play Music.

Monday, September 24th, 2018

In February, we posted a teardown that revealed audio quality controls for YouTube Music Premium much like those in Google Play Music. The settings remained inaccessible, however, until an app update on Friday, Sept. 21st. YouTube Music Premium users can now set the quality for audio downloads for both wifi and mobile data. These controls mirror the options available in Play Music, which have been available for nearly two years.

Google Home playback issues with Play Music purchases have apparently been fixed

Monday, August 6th, 2018

Slightly over a year ago, an update was pushed to the Google Home that allowed users to play purchased tunes from Play Music. Issues with the feature cropped up almost immediately, and Google engineers have been going back and forth with users since. At long last, the company says it has finally fixed all playback issues.

The main support thread for the issue has nearly 900 replies at this point, and Emily from Google today responded with this message:

I have some good news regarding this feature.

[Free Alert] Paula Abdul ICON, jazz sampler, and more albums are gratis on Google Play Music

Friday, July 27th, 2018

Google recently started handing out free music via Play Music again, and we're glad to see the trend back. Almost none of the music is the kind that most of us usually listen to, but hey, free is free. This time around, we've got a pretty wide variety, from jazz to Dutch pop.

Here's the list:

Oddly enough, the Amazon Jazz Sampler album itself is still paid, but the individual songs are free.
