Google Home can now read your imported and iCal calendars

Thursday, July 12th, 2018

Multiple calendar support on Google Home has been available since last November, but the feature has been very limited. You couldn't choose your birthday or holiday calendars, ones created from a G Suite account, or imported calendars from URLs/iCal. That last part has recently changed, even though the support page hasn't caught up to it yet.

If you head over to your Calendar section in the Google Home app (under More settings), you should find a list of all your personal and shared calendars, plus the ones you've imported via a URL or iCal.

Continued Conversation for Google Assistant starts rolling out today

Thursday, June 21st, 2018

Google spent a lot of time at I/O last month talking about Google Assistant. There was that wild Duplex demo, "pretty please" mode for kids, and Continued Conversations. The latter feature saves you from saying the trigger phrase for every single command, and it's starting to roll out today. However, not everyone will have access just yet.

Continued Conversation is off by default, so you'll need to dig into the Assistant settings to change it.

Google Home and Chromecast can leak your location, but a fix is on the way

Monday, June 18th, 2018

Google Homes and Chromecasts around the world will be quietly updated in the coming weeks with a patch for a rather serious issue. According to security researcher Craig Young from Tripwire, these devices have a vulnerability that could allow an attacker to find your geographic location if you have a Home or Chromecast on your network. That's a big problem, and Google almost didn't believe Young's bug report.

The issue is that Home and Chromecasts don't require authentication for commands that come over your local network.

Google Home Max makes its way to Canada, priced at $499 CAD

Wednesday, May 16th, 2018

Google released the Home Max near the end of last year, but there's still only one country it's officially available in: the United States. That changes today, though; the Home Max is now being sold in the Great White North at a price of $499 CAD (~$389 USD).

As you might expect from its name, the Home Max is Google's largest and most expensive smart speaker. In our review of it, we found that it's easy to set up, the sound quality is good, the design is inviting, and its voice recognition works even over loud music.

Hey Google: Alarms and timers should work seamlessly across all my devices

Tuesday, May 15th, 2018

Alarms and timers are probably two of the things I use the Google Assistant for most often. Voice commands making setting them dead simple (especially important for the kitchen, when my hands are often covered in food), and I can use them on my phone, my Pixelbook, or one of my Google Homes.

The problem is that, for all the endpoint ubiquity of setting and managing these timers via the Assistant, I can't actually control or set timers for one device from another.

Google rolls out fix for setting alarms and reminders on Google Home speakers

Saturday, April 21st, 2018

Asking your Google Home smart speaker to set an alarm or reminder is a rudimentary use case for those devices. But it seems some users recently found that their Google Home failed to sound alarms and reminders that were set. Now Google is saying that a fix has been rolled out and those functions are working again.

A few users in the Google Home Help Forum brought up the issue, saying they used their voice to set alarms or reminders on their Google Home and received an audible confirmation.
