Google Duo v45 prepares pre-call notifications, continues work on Low Light mode and sending pre-recorded videos [APK Teardown]

Sunday, December 9th, 2018

A new update to Duo is out in the wild, but like many others, there's not much to see upon installation. We're all about the teardown on this one, which hints at some kind of pre-call notification and adds follow-ups on the topics of Low Light mode and sending pre-recorded videos to somebody else through Duo.

Google Duo is making it easier to send video messages

Wednesday, December 5th, 2018

You've been able to send video messages on Google Duo since March. The current implementation isn't particularly elegant, though; it's more like leaving a voicemail than intentionally sending a message. The app will receive an update this week that simplifies messaging, eliminating the need to call your recipient before sending.

To leave a video message on Duo now, you have to first call one of your contacts, then tap the Leave video message button that appears on the call screen.

Thursday, November 22nd, 2018

Now that we're deep into the holiday season, plenty of people will be talking with their families, even if they can't necessarily travel long distances to reunite in person. Video calls will be skyrocketing for the next few weeks, and for many people, that will be happening with Google Duo. The latest update to v44 is now out, and while it doesn't appear to bring any new features immediately upon installation, there are a few things spotted in a teardown that will be pretty useful when they do come to life.

Google Duo v43 drops some colors, prepares sharing videos during calls, data saving mode, and an email blocklist [APK Teardown]

Wednesday, November 7th, 2018

Google Duo is getting an update today, and you'll actually see some changes if you install it, even though it's really just to remove colors from the Settings screen. However, a teardown shows there's actually a lot more coming in the future, including the ability to block email, a data saver mode, and maybe even the ability to show previously recorded videos to other people while you're on a call.

[Update: Duo audio calls too] Google Home Hub supports Duo calls, but the recipient will only see your profile pic

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018

When the Google Home Hub leaks first started, everyone was miffed by the absence of a front-facing camera for Duo calls. Later, with the device's official announcement, those leaks were proven to be true, and Google explained that it chose to skip the cam for privacy reasons (though we all know the decision was more likely a matter of competitive pricing.) However, what we didn't know was that the Home Hub would indeed support Duo calls, even without the camera.

Google Duo v42 prepares sending video messages to multiple recipients [APK Teardown]

Friday, October 19th, 2018

Duo is getting an update today, bringing the version number up to 42. Upon install, there aren't any visible changes, but a quick teardown points to a potentially great enhancement. Just in time for the holidays, users may get to send video messages to multiple recipients, thus saving the time it would take to record a message to each and every person individually.

Google Duo v41 prepares contact pinning and calling Home devices linked to your account [APK Teardown]

Saturday, October 6th, 2018

The latest version of Google Duo has landed, but like so many other updates, it doesn't appear to change anything immediately upon installation. However, as tradition dictates, there are a couple of interesting things to see from a teardown. It looks like Duo will be adding support for pinning contacts to the top of your list for convenient access. You should also be able to begin making calls to smart displays linked to your account for an easy way to call home.

Update Notes for YouTube, Duo, Drive, the Google app, and more (September 16, 2018)

Sunday, September 16th, 2018

Every week, I examine somewhere in the neighborhood of a hundred app updates while looking for changes. The most interesting things turn into APK Teardowns or Download posts. Many of the remaining updates are unremarkable, amounting to a few bug fixes, routine updates to libraries, or even just pixel-level adjustments to layouts and images. However, there are usually a few updates that land somewhere in between. I don't want to spam readers with dozens of short posts, but I hate to ignore things that people might want to know about, so I'm going to wrap up the leftovers for a little weekend reading and call it Update Notes.

Tip: You can video call your Smart Display at home from your phone (with both on the same Duo account)

Sunday, September 9th, 2018

If you have one of the fancy new Assistant Smart Displays, be it the already available Lenovo or the soon-to-be-released JBL Link View, odds are you're going to set up Duo on it and use it for video calls. One neat feature that you may not be aware of, though, is that you can video call your display from your phone, with both set up to use the same Duo account.
