Google Duo turns two years old today

Thursday, August 16th, 2018

Two years ago today, Google released its 'Duo' video chat app for iPhone and Android. It was designed to replace the video chat component of Hangouts, just as Allo was supposed to supplant Hangouts' messaging functionality. Fast forward to the present, and Duo has definitely achieved its goal of making cross-platform video chat easier, even if it's not the runaway success Google probably hoped for.

Duo has continued to recieve updates, while Allo development is in a holding pattern.

You can now video call people on Duo through Google Assistant

Monday, July 23rd, 2018

Google Assistant is a quirky little helper. It can grab a feed from your security camera and livestream it on your TV, but for the longest time, it wasn't able to send a message on Allo or start a video call on Duo, Google's own services. The latter is starting to change now, though we knew this was bound to happen with the launch of Smart Displays getting closer.

With Google Assistant on your phone, you can say "video call contact_name" and Assistant will reply, saying it's making a video call on Duo.

Google Duo v37 may be adding “pause” to video chats and rewards for referring friends [APK Teardown]

Thursday, July 12th, 2018

A new version of Google Duo is began rolling out earlier today. It doesn't look like any new features have gone live with this update, nor does it appear to restore the screen sharing feature that was briefly enabled a couple months ago. However, there are some new things to look forward to in the future, including what is likely a pause button for video chats and a reward system for inviting friends to use Duo.

Google Duo multi-device support starts rolling out [APK Download]

Wednesday, July 4th, 2018

Google Duo's saga with multi-device support is nearing its end. Just as the US celebrates its independence, our beloved video chatting app is getting its own sovereignty from the shackles of single-device support and spreading its wings to land on as many phones and tablets as you want — with just as many caveats as you can imagine.

If you've already signed up for Duo on one of your phones, opening the app now might (server-side) show you a pop-up screen that explains you can now use your Google account to sign in to Duo on other devices.

Google Duo v36 drops Jelly Bean and adds some finishing touches for tablets and smart displays [APK Teardown]

Monday, June 25th, 2018

An update to the Duo app is making its way out, but this appears to be a small-ish service update, at least for now. There's no specific sign that this version will re-launch the screen sharing feature after it rolled out in a malfunctioning state with v34, but it's possible that the implementation has been fixed and the feature will be turned on later. Instead, this update marks the end of Jelly Bean support.

Google Duo lets you export your call history easily, no ADB hacks necessary

Monday, June 11th, 2018

With version 32 of Google Duo, Cody discovered an activity that would let him export the call log history to any app on his device. Despite the feature being functional, it wasn't visible and had to be triggered from ADB through your computer. Now, the option is getting its own UI element, although it's hidden where you don't expect it to be.

Open the Google Duo app, tap the overflow menu on the top right, and choose Help & feedback.
