Hot on the heels of Allo's update over the weekend, Duo is now out with a new version of its own. Like Allo, its adaptive icon has been retouched to get rid of the infamous dinner plate look. While there aren't any other changes to the app on the surface, a teardown provides us with clues that Duo may support signing in with and being contacted through your Google account.

Tuesday, October 24th, 2017

There's a new version of Duo rolling out today, but it doesn't bring any huge changes for users today. However, a teardown shows that the developers are still plenty active as they work on some tools to experiment with camera effects, including new controls for adjusting brightness, contrast, and saturation. Also in this update are new details for a voicemail-like feature for sending voice and video messages outside of a call.

Google Phone v12 reveals further Duo integration is coming [APK Teardown]

Friday, September 8th, 2017

Over the last few months, Google has been taking small steps to integrate Allo and Duo into different pieces of the phone. Most recently, Allo shortcuts were added to the Contacts app, but today's teardown is more closely related to Duo recording its video chats to the system call log. It looks like Google's next step may involve having its Phone app be a little more forward about Duo.

Google Duo turns one year old today

Thursday, August 17th, 2017

It has been over a year since Google introduced its two new messaging apps - Allo and Duo. While Allo was a standard messaging app, Duo attempted to make mobile video calling as easy as possible. And today, the app turns one year old.

Unlike Allo, which was rather half-baked when it launched, Duo was a surprisingly solid app on day one. Just install the app on iOS or Android, register your phone number, and that's it.

Google Duo brings video calls to Truecaller

Tuesday, August 1st, 2017

In March, Truecaller made a bunch of announcements for version 8 of the app, including a planned integration with Google Duo. At the time, the feature was promised "in the coming months" and it looks like those months have elapsed as the latest Truecaller changelog says the option is now live.

Both users need to have the Google Duo app installed, so this isn't some magical built-in Duo tech but it's more like a quick shortcut to launch a video call without leaving the Truecaller app.

Duo now integrates with your phone’s call history [APK Download]

Wednesday, July 19th, 2017

Last month, it started to look like Duo would add its own calls to your phone's call history. While the app asked users for permission to manage the call history, it didn't actually work yet. Now it seems like Google has flipped the server-side switch, and the feature is now working.

There's not much to this, but it's definitely a nice addition. When you open the app, Duo will ask you for permission to manage phone calls.

Duo passes 100 million installs on the Google Play Store

Saturday, July 15th, 2017

Ever since Allo and Duo launched, Duo has seemed like the more 'complete' app. Whereas Allo is still missing critical functionality (like a desktop client/webapp) nearly a year later, Duo has been a pretty solid product since day one. And now it has passed a major milestone, with the Play Store reporting that it has passed 100 million installations.

This number also factors in people who had Duo pre-installed on their phone, and several OEMs have included the app on their products.

Duo v12 enables auto-hiding controls, hints at low-bandwidth audio mode and a couple logical notifications [APK Teardown + Download]

Thursday, June 8th, 2017

Duo remains one of Google's most minimal apps, so it feels like even small changes were carefully considered before earning a place in an update. The latest version of Duo is rolling out now with one such tweak that allows the on-screen controls to disappear when they're not in use. A teardown also reveals plans to make audio calls even more resilient on low-bandwidth connections and to add a couple of notifications that might give users more reasons to open the app more often.
