OnePlus adds Google Duo integration to OxygenOS Phone app

Friday, February 15th, 2019

If you have a OnePlus phone, and you've been paying close attention to the changelogs, you may have noticed that the last OxygenOS update included better integration with Google Duo. OnePlus has now officially announced the new functionality, and explained how it came to be added.

Starting with OxygenOS 9.0.12 on the OnePlus 6T, and OxygenOS 9.0.4 for OnePlus 6/5/5T, Duo is now integrated into the default Phone app. It's very similar to the integration Google added to the Pixel's dialer in 2017 — a video button appears alongside contact names in the dial pad, call log, and other sections.

Wednesday, February 13th, 2019

As florists, chocolate makers, and greeting card companies alike gear up for one of the biggest sales days of the year — Valentine's Day — tech companies are preparing their own festive offerings for the sentimental celebration. This year, Google Duo is offering a Valentine's Day video effect for long-distance loves, and it's already showing up for many users.

We spotted the Valentine's Day video effect last month in an APK teardown along with a partially working 'Favorites' list.

Google Duo v47 prepares a drawing mode to doodle on your video messages [APK Teardown]

Tuesday, February 5th, 2019

Google's video chat app Duo has always been a pretty lightweight app, seemingly focused primarily on keeping the interface simple and prioritizing video and audio quality over flooding it with features. We've seen a few features slowly emerge over the last couple of years, and just about as many have been implemented and subsequently removed before launching. While we wait to see the eventual launch of a favorites list for contacts, there's another new feature in development that may liven up your video chats: Drawing mode.

Google Duo v46 adds partially working ‘Favorites’ list, prepares Valentine’s Day video effect [APK Teardown]

Saturday, January 19th, 2019

An update to Google's Duo app began rolling out earlier today, and unlike many other recent app updates, there's actually a brand new feature that doesn't appear to be locked behind a server-side switch. Unfortunately, it also appears that it may not be working properly, and might have been left enabled by accident. Duo is also preparing a special video effect in honor of Valentine's Day.

Google Duo v45 prepares pre-call notifications, continues work on Low Light mode and sending pre-recorded videos [APK Teardown]

Sunday, December 9th, 2018

A new update to Duo is out in the wild, but like many others, there's not much to see upon installation. We're all about the teardown on this one, which hints at some kind of pre-call notification and adds follow-ups on the topics of Low Light mode and sending pre-recorded videos to somebody else through Duo.

Google Duo is making it easier to send video messages

Wednesday, December 5th, 2018

You've been able to send video messages on Google Duo since March. The current implementation isn't particularly elegant, though; it's more like leaving a voicemail than intentionally sending a message. The app will receive an update this week that simplifies messaging, eliminating the need to call your recipient before sending.

To leave a video message on Duo now, you have to first call one of your contacts, then tap the Leave video message button that appears on the call screen.

Video calls will be skyrocketing for the next few weeks, and for many people, that will be happening with Google Duo. The latest update to v44 is now out, and while it doesn't appear to bring any new features immediately upon installation, there are a few things spotted in a teardown that will be pretty useful when they do come to life.

Google Duo is getting an update today, and you'll actually see some changes if you install it, even though it's really just to remove colors from the Settings screen. However, a teardown shows there's actually a lot more coming in the future, including the ability to block email, a data saver mode, and maybe even the ability to show previously recorded videos to other people while you're on a call.

[Update: Duo audio calls too] Google Home Hub supports Duo calls, but the recipient will only see your profile pic

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018

When the Google Home Hub leaks first started, everyone was miffed by the absence of a front-facing camera for Duo calls. Later, with the device's official announcement, those leaks were proven to be true, and Google explained that it chose to skip the cam for privacy reasons (though we all know the decision was more likely a matter of competitive pricing.) However, what we didn't know was that the Home Hub would indeed support Duo calls, even without the camera.
