[Deal Alert] Get $300 off the Note 8 or Galaxy S9/S9+ at Best Buy when you set up an installment plan

Friday, May 25th, 2018

Samsung's latest smartphones are quite nice, but they're also painfully expensive. Even when you split up the payments monthly, a $1,000 phone can put a dent in your bank account. Best Buy has a tempting deal today that'll knock $300 off the total cost of the Note 8, Galaxy S9, or Galaxy S9+ as long as you activate it on an installment plan.

The pricing varies a bit depending on which carrier you go with: AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon.

3 of our favorite tech sales, discounts, and deals this week

Saturday, May 19th, 2018

Deal-hunting online is one of those seemingly harmless, fun pursuits that can quickly get out of hand. That tricky-to-satisfy urge to make sure you're getting the best value around is not at all helped by the existence of deals that come and go in a flash, tempting you to make some purchasing decisions right on the spot. While we've seen a few of those more ephemeral deals pass by this week, some sales have still managed to stick around, allowing you to make up your mind at a much more comfortable pace.

[Deal Alert] Get a Verizon Galaxy S9 for $520 ($200 off) or S9+ for $640 ($200 off) from Samsung

Saturday, May 19th, 2018

If you're on Verizon Wireless and are interested in Samsung's latest flagship smartphones, here's a fairly straightforward deal for you: Get a Galaxy S9 for $519.99 or an S9+ for $639.99 if you sign up for a 24-month device payment plan via Samsung.com. No trade-in or down payment is required to get this $200 discount on each of these phones.

This is the best price we've seen for the S9, and the price for the S9+ matches what we saw Samsung offering for the AT&T variants last month (though that deal also threw in a free DeX Pad).

T-Mobile pulled a Galaxy S9 and S9+ update more than a month ago, and it’s still not available

Friday, May 18th, 2018

Slow and delayed updates are nothing new for Android devices, but T-Mobile and Samsung seem to be having more issues than usual. Back in April, T-Mobile had to halt the Note 8's Oreo update for several weeks, but it turns out the Galaxy S9 and S9+ had some botched updates of their own. The carrier paused an update in April, and it hasn't restarted more than a month later.

The update in question was just for bug fixes and security patches, so it's not as important as the Note 8's update.

Galaxy S9 and S9+ to soon be available in Sunrise Gold and Burgundy Red, but not in the US

Wednesday, May 16th, 2018

In the past few years, Samsung has been launching new colors for its flagship phones a few months after release to keep things fresh. The company has just announced two new colors for the Galaxy S9 and S9+: Sunrise Gold and Burgundy Red. Unfortunately, neither is coming stateside.

This is the first time we're seeing Sunrise Gold. The color is said to have "a satin gloss finish which wraps the smartphone in a tranquil glow and glimmer," create "a feeling of vibrancy and calm," and "appeal to all users by bringing a stylistic touch of high fashion and urban interior design to a user's mobile device." That's a lot of PR speak, but it does seem like a nice deviation from the gold we see on most phones.

Samsung rolling out update to fix Galaxy S9 and S9+ call stability issues

Saturday, May 5th, 2018

Reliably making phone calls on your smartphone is easy to take for granted, but there's nothing like disrupted and dropped calls to help you appreciate that simple function again. Some Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ owners are having their voices muted or distorted during calls, or having their calls dropped altogether. Now Samsung is starting to roll out a software update in some countries to fix these issues.

These problems have been reported by more than a few users around the world, and late last month Samsung said a fix would roll out soon.

Samsung will cram bloatware apps from Verizon’s Oath into its phones

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2018

You know what my $800 smartphone is missing? Sponsored content and ads that are accessible with a hardware button. No one has ever actually said that and meant it, but that's what Samsung owners could be getting very soon. Verizon's Oath, which includes Yahoo and AOL properties, has announced a deal with Samsung to integrate its content and "native ads" into Bixby Home and pre-load more bloatware apps. As if you didn't already have enough reason to disable Bixby.
