Samsung patents a possible notch-killer, may sneak a camera into the S Pen

Tuesday, February 5th, 2019

The S Pen has always differentiated the Note series from other flagship smartphones, and each year Samsung has made it a little bit better. With the Galaxy Note 9, Samsung enhanced the S Pen with Bluetooth connectivity and the ability to supercharge 30 minutes of power in under a minute. Today, the USPTO has granted a patent that could see the S Pen also used as a camera with an optical zoom — potentially removing the need for a camera notch (or hole-punch).

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 on AT&T gets its Pie update

Thursday, January 31st, 2019

Samsung promised it would start rolling out Pie updates in the US this month, and it's technically living up to that. However, only a few phones have gotten the new version so far, including Verizon and Sprint's Galaxy S9s. Today, AT&T becomes the first carrier to deploy a Note 9 Pie update. You'll have to find some WiFi to get started.

The update hitting phones clocks in at 1.8GB, and it sounds like AT&T's servers are getting hammered.

Chrome OS Instant Tethering is rolling out to non-Pixel phones

Saturday, January 26th, 2019

While Chrome OS' offline usability has improved a lot since the platform's early days, there's no denying that an internet connection is still essential to get a lot of things done on a Chromebook. When you're away from WiFi, you can tether your phone's connection, but Google has a smarter ace up its sleeve: Instant Tethering. The feature started showing up two years ago to link two Android devices, was later one of the highlights of the Pixelbook announcement, then expanded to more Chrome OS devices.

T-Mobile rolls out Caller Verified spam call protection, starting with the Galaxy Note9

Thursday, January 10th, 2019

To say that spam calls are annoying would not only be redundant, but it'd also be a big understatement. These nuisances are primarily why I hardly answer my phone anymore and they've only gotten worse in recent months and years. T-Mobile is taking a stand against it by implementing what it calls Caller Verified technology, starting with the Samsung Galaxy Note9.

Once Note9 owners get the update, any calls on the T-Mobile network that they receive will show a "Caller verified" message on the incoming call screen, assuming that Tmo itself has authenticated the call as legitimate and not hijacked.

Friday, January 4th, 2019

Samsung, I must tip my hat to you. The company is doing a better job this year with the Pie update than it has in any year prior. After beta testing Android 9 with One UI on its Galaxy S9/S9+ and Note9 for a bit, it rolled out the stable version to the former on Christmas and updated its forecast for the latter to say it would land in January instead of February.
