Essential is reportedly working on an AI phone that operates through voice commands

Wednesday, October 10th, 2018

While Essential's first device has a cult following among those who prioritize quick Android updates, it became clear in May that it would never see a follow-up. A report from Bloomberg revealed that the company had canceled a second Essential Phone and put itself up for sale. However, over the past several months, the company has quietly chugged along, continuing to push out lightning-fast security patches. Now, a new report from Bloomberg states that the company is indeed working on a second device — but it's not at all like its first product.

Essential Phone re-review: Good software isn’t good enough for most of us

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2018

When it was first released, Essential's entry into the phone market was a bit of a flop. Reviews for the PH-1 weren't profoundly negative, but the phone's almost $700 price was humorously high considering its features and problems at the time. A bit over a year later, many of its early issues have been fixed or improved, the phone is one of just a handful to be updated to Android 9 Pie, and it's dropped down as cheap as $250 for Amazon Prime Day — though it's closer to $330 now.

Essential pushes October security update, brings back notch support

Monday, October 1st, 2018

In a move that will surprise few at this point, Essential pushed out the latest Android 9 Pie release with October security patches within minutes of Google. Perhaps more exciting is the fact that with this update, the company is bringing back notch support.

The settings for customizing how each app uses the status bar/notch area disappeared after the transfer from Android 8.1 to 9.0, when Google introduced new notch logic.

Essential Phone finally gets support for YouTube zoom-to-fill

Wednesday, August 29th, 2018

Now that almost every major smartphone has a display with a ratio around 18:9, regular old 16:9 videos aren't looking too hot with their black bars. To combat this, YouTube added a helpful zoom-to-fill feature to its Android app, but that functionality only works on select, more mainstream devices. After months of waiting, Essential Phone owners are finally seeing it on their phones.

In case you're not familiar with the feature by chance, zoom-to-fill basically crops a bit off the tops and bottoms of 16:9 videos to eliminate black bars on phones with taller aspect ratios.

[Deal Alert] Essential Phone in Halo Gray down to $280 ($220 off) on Amazon

Sunday, August 19th, 2018

Aside from its incredible build and lightning-quick updates, I'd argue that the most interesting thing about the Essential Phone is how low its price dropped in such a short time; this once-$700 phone hit an all-time low of just $249.99 on Amazon last month for Prime Day. Today's deal on the Halo Gray Essential Phone can't quite beat that, but at $279.99, it comes close.

The Essential Phone comes with a 5.7" 1440p LCD, a Snapdragon 835, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, dual 13MP rear cameras, an 8MP selfie-shooter, and a 3,040mAh battery.

Essential Phone’s Android 9 Pie update is rolling out, minutes after Google’s announcement

Monday, August 6th, 2018

Mere minutes after Google announced the Android 9.0 Pie name and official launch, Essential has tweeted that its own Pie update is rolling out to the PH-1 right now. Somehow, in spite of the serious financial problems the company is facing, it's still killing it in terms of updates.

[Deal Alert] Essential Phone being offered with free Earphones HD, 360 Camera, and camera case for $399

Saturday, August 4th, 2018

The Essential Phone has seen some pretty crazy deals over the past few months, but the best one we saw came last month during Prime Day. Today's deal isn't quite as good, but if you're interested in picking an Essential Phone up, Essential will toss in a pair of its Earphones HD, a 360 Camera, and a protective camera case for free.

Essential drops latest Android P Developer Preview within minutes of Google

Wednesday, July 25th, 2018

The only phone company faster to update its devices these days than Google is Essential. Although the company may be running up against rough times, it has consistently offered timely OTAs for security patches and Developer Previews. Like last month, the company is rolling out its own spin on the release candidate-ready DP5 (Beta 3, so far as Essential's numbering goes) a mere hour after Google.

Essential Phone likely to receive Android Q update… someday — frequent camera tweaks due in the short term

Thursday, July 19th, 2018

Deemed just “essentially okay” by Ryan shortly after its launch, when it was still selling for $700, the Essential Phone was essentially a must-buy earlier this week, at a discounted price of $250. Bargain hunters who are only starting to get accustomed to the divisive Andy Rubin-created device may want to know the company answers questions every month on Reddit.

The latest AMA session didn’t exactly include any earth-shattering news or game-changing revelations, and there’s still a good chance a PH-2 will never be released.

[Deal Alert] Essential Phone hits all-time low of $250 for Amazon Prime Day

Monday, July 16th, 2018

Prime Day is upon us, and the deals are piling up. Essential has announced that on Amazon, its PH-1 will go for just $250 — that's $450 off its launch price and more than $200 off its current price — beginning today at noon, Pacific time.

At launch, we ruled the Essential Phone was just okay. The design is interesting and the hardware is nice, but for $700, the camera was lacking.
