Update Notes for YouTube, Duo, Drive, the Google app, and more (September 16, 2018)

Sunday, September 16th, 2018

Every week, I examine somewhere in the neighborhood of a hundred app updates while looking for changes. The most interesting things turn into APK Teardowns or Download posts. Many of the remaining updates are unremarkable, amounting to a few bug fixes, routine updates to libraries, or even just pixel-level adjustments to layouts and images. However, there are usually a few updates that land somewhere in between. I don't want to spam readers with dozens of short posts, but I hate to ignore things that people might want to know about, so I'm going to wrap up the leftovers for a little weekend reading and call it Update Notes.

Google Duo invite rewards scheme goes live in the Philippines

Thursday, September 13th, 2018

In the last couple of versions of Google Duo, Cody has found evidence of rewards for inviting friends to install the app (v37 and v38). The scheme now appears to have gone live for users in the Philippines, potentially ahead of being launched in other regions.

The video calling app clearly isn't as popular as Google had hoped, but maybe bribes entice more users to install it. Our last APK Teardown revealed rewards such as covering some of the costs of data usage, as well as actual cash rewards paid through the app formally known as Tez, India's version of Google Pay.

Google Duo turns two years old today

Thursday, August 16th, 2018

Two years ago today, Google released its 'Duo' video chat app for iPhone and Android. It was designed to replace the video chat component of Hangouts, just as Allo was supposed to supplant Hangouts' messaging functionality. Fast forward to the present, and Duo has definitely achieved its goal of making cross-platform video chat easier, even if it's not the runaway success Google probably hoped for.

Duo has continued to recieve updates, while Allo development is in a holding pattern.

And if you're interested in scoring some rewards in trade for signing friends up to Duo, you'll have something to look forward to.

Thursday, July 12th, 2018

A new version of Google Duo is began rolling out earlier today. It doesn't look like any new features have gone live with this update, nor does it appear to restore the screen sharing feature that was briefly enabled a couple months ago. However, there are some new things to look forward to in the future, including what is likely a pause button for video chats and a reward system for inviting friends to use Duo.

Google Duo v36 drops Jelly Bean and adds some finishing touches for tablets and smart displays [APK Teardown]

Monday, June 25th, 2018

An update to the Duo app is making its way out, but this appears to be a small-ish service update, at least for now. There's no specific sign that this version will re-launch the screen sharing feature after it rolled out in a malfunctioning state with v34, but it's possible that the implementation has been fixed and the feature will be turned on later. Instead, this update marks the end of Jelly Bean support.

Saturday, May 19th, 2018

We've been anticipating the official launch of screen sharing in Duo for about many months, ever since a teardown in mid-October revealed it to be in development. We've even seen basically what it looks like, albeit just as a sample. Now with the rollout of v34, we can all begin sharing our screens with friends, or more likely, help our parents fix something that's not working on their phones.
