Google Drive on Android now supports encrypted Office files [APK Download]

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2018

Google Drive on the web received the ability to read password-protected Microsoft Office files a while ago - well over a year ago, in fact. This capability is finally rolling out to Drive on Android, and we've got the APK if you need it.

WHAT'S NEW

  • Support viewing and opening password-protected Microsoft Office files.
  • Bug fixes and performance improvements

What this means is that you can now view Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files that have been password-protected on your Android device (granted that you have the password, of course).

Google+ v10.7 prepares to add dedicated post titles and Drive attachments with automatic previews [APK Teardown]

Monday, June 4th, 2018

A few weeks ago, it became clear that G0ogle+ is headed toward a pretty major overhaul to the post editor that would bring support for new formatting and styling options for text. The latest update brings clues that this isn't where the new features will stop. It looks like Google+ may also add separate titles to posts and also integrate with Google Drive for attachments and that will include previews.

Teardown

Google One cloud storage announced – offers twice the capacity of Dropbox Pro for $10/month

Monday, May 14th, 2018

Google Drive doesn't break the bank when it comes to storage. For a mere $20 a year, you can add 100 GB to your combined Google service data pool and apply that space to anything from Google Photos to overly-large emails. And now Google is making things a bit more clear when it comes to the subject of storage for its various services. The new Google One replaces all non-G Suite business Google Drive storage plans with a wider variety of storage options, some at an improved value.

To be perfectly clear, Drive isn't going anywhere.

[Update: Google is working on a fix] Downloading Motion Photos via Google’s Backup and Sync is broken for some

Downloading Motion Photos via Google’s Backup and Sync is broken for some

For many people, especially those of us here at Android Police, Google's various backup tools are an integral part of our daily workflow. Frankly, I'd have to entirely restructure how I do things without the convenience of Google Photos and Google Drive/Backup and Sync. For some, the combination of those two services isn't working as expected when it comes to Motion Photos, and backup synchronization to a desktop fails for those MVIMG-labeled images.

This isn't the first time Motion Photos have introduced problems with Google Drive.

Google Photos v3.14 may have dropped support for Jelly Bean, prepares to launch Favorites, teases Austin’s Mysteryer feature [APK Teardown]

Tuesday, February 13th, 2018

Version 3.14 of Google Photos just started rolling out a little earlier today. This one doesn't appear to have any new features or major changes, but it might possibly be leaving behind some older versions of Android. This update could also be preparing to launch the Favorites feature spotted in a previous teardown. Looking further into the APK's resources, there are also signs of more options related to Shared Libraries. And finally, Austin's Mysteryer feature takes yet another turn.

G Suite adds search within folders along with accessibility upgrades

Wednesday, January 10th, 2018

Google has once again updated its G Suite office applications with some welcome new features, this time for search and accessibility.

In Google Drive, G Suite users can now search within specific folders. On the desktop, a right-click on a folder or selecting a folder from the drop-down menu will offer up a new option to search within that folder. I was frankly surprised that this didn't already exist in such a straightforward way, so I bet it will get a lot of use.

Google is removing the Photos tab from Drive in January

Tuesday, December 5th, 2017

Right now there are two ways to access images uploaded to Google Photos from within the Google Drive desktop site. You can either access your photos from the "Google Photos" tab on the left or enable a setting that reveals your photos as files sorted inside an appropriately named folder. Next month, the first of the two options will be removed.

Google Photos is an integral part of the workflow around these parts, so we pay significant attention when it changes (and when it bugs out).
