Google One coming to India in the next few weeks

Wednesday, September 19th, 2018

Google One will soon land in India, meaning that users there have access to the revamped cloud storage experience that works across Google's services like Gmail and Photos. There is a price option to suit anyone's needs, whether that be some extra space to store pictures or a couple terabytes to keep everything backed up.

This doesn't replace Drive, mind you, it's just the new name for the various price tiers associated with Google's products, as we noted in the original announcement post.

Update Notes for YouTube, Duo, Drive, the Google app, and more (September 16, 2018)

Sunday, September 16th, 2018

Every week, I examine somewhere in the neighborhood of a hundred app updates while looking for changes. The most interesting things turn into APK Teardowns or Download posts. Many of the remaining updates are unremarkable, amounting to a few bug fixes, routine updates to libraries, or even just pixel-level adjustments to layouts and images. However, there are usually a few updates that land somewhere in between. I don't want to spam readers with dozens of short posts, but I hate to ignore things that people might want to know about, so I'm going to wrap up the leftovers for a little weekend reading and call it Update Notes.

[Update: Still waiting] Google One is open to everybody in the US starting today

Tuesday, August 28th, 2018

Google One, Google's new cloud storage management and product support service, has had a strangely protracted rollout. It was announced all the way back in May, and showed up on the Play Store shortly thereafter. It wasn't long until invites started going out to a select few, but now, in mid-August, some users still don't have access to it. That's changing, though, as Google has announced that "people in the U.S.

WhatsApp backups to stop counting against your Google Drive storage allowance

Thursday, August 16th, 2018

If you're one of the 1.5 billion WhatsApp users of the world, you'll know how important it is to back up your messages. Google Drive backups are conveniently built into the app but have always taken up valuable bytes of your storage quota. Starting later this year, WhatsApp is teaming up with Google to make backups entirely free.

Almost all of my communication with friends and family goes through the platform, so the thought of losing my chat history is an uncomfortable one.

Google Drive is set to hit one billion users by the end of the week

Wednesday, July 25th, 2018

Everybody uses Google Drive, right? Well, no, but we're getting there. Google announced at its Google Cloud Next conference in San Francisco that its cloud storage service is on track to roll over one billion users by the end of the week.

Drive will be the eighth Google product to cross the billion-user threshold after Android, Chrome, Gmail, Maps, the Play Store, search, and YouTube. The Google Drive app passed a billion total downloads several years ago, but it's apparently taken time for all those downloads to translate into users.

Google Drive on Android now supports encrypted Office files [APK Download]

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2018

Google Drive on the web received the ability to read password-protected Microsoft Office files a while ago - well over a year ago, in fact. This capability is finally rolling out to Drive on Android, and we've got the APK if you need it.

WHAT'S NEW

  • Support viewing and opening password-protected Microsoft Office files.
  • Bug fixes and performance improvements

What this means is that you can now view Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files that have been password-protected on your Android device (granted that you have the password, of course).

Google+ v10.7 prepares to add dedicated post titles and Drive attachments with automatic previews [APK Teardown]

Monday, June 4th, 2018

A few weeks ago, it became clear that G0ogle+ is headed toward a pretty major overhaul to the post editor that would bring support for new formatting and styling options for text. The latest update brings clues that this isn't where the new features will stop. It looks like Google+ may also add separate titles to posts and also integrate with Google Drive for attachments and that will include previews.

Teardown

Disclaimer: Teardowns are based on evidence found inside of apks (Android's application package) and are necessarily speculative and usually based on incomplete information.
