Google Photos v3.14 may have dropped support for Jelly Bean, prepares to launch Favorites, teases Austin’s Mysteryer feature [APK Teardown]

Tuesday, February 13th, 2018

Version 3.14 of Google Photos just started rolling out a little earlier today. This one doesn't appear to have any new features or major changes, but it might possibly be leaving behind some older versions of Android. This update could also be preparing to launch the Favorites feature spotted in a previous teardown. Looking further into the APK's resources, there are also signs of more options related to Shared Libraries. And finally, Austin's Mysteryer feature takes yet another turn.

G Suite adds search within folders along with accessibility upgrades

Wednesday, January 10th, 2018

Google has once again updated its G Suite office applications with some welcome new features, this time for search and accessibility.

In Google Drive, G Suite users can now search within specific folders. On the desktop, a right-click on a folder or selecting a folder from the drop-down menu will offer up a new option to search within that folder. I was frankly surprised that this didn't already exist in such a straightforward way, so I bet it will get a lot of use.

Google is removing the Photos tab from Drive in January

Tuesday, December 5th, 2017

Right now there are two ways to access images uploaded to Google Photos from within the Google Drive desktop site. You can either access your photos from the "Google Photos" tab on the left or enable a setting that reveals your photos as files sorted inside an appropriately named folder. Next month, the first of the two options will be removed.

Google Photos is an integral part of the workflow around these parts, so we pay significant attention when it changes (and when it bugs out).

[Deal Alert] Samsung 64GB and 128GB USB-C flash drives just $19.99 and $39.99 on Amazon ($10-12 off)

Sunday, November 5th, 2017

USB-C is the future, but as we're all slowly switching to the updated port, the change isn't without its inconveniences. Chief among them: all your old stuff isn't gonna work without dongles and adapters.

Why not just use it as an excuse to upgrade? That old 2GB drive you've been hanging onto isn't enough space anyway, and Amazon's just dropped the price on Samsung's 64GB ($19.99) and 128GB ($39.99) USB-C flash drives, bringing each to an all-time low.

Allegedly these drives are USB 3.1, offering speeds of up to 150MB/s.

Google fixes bug that prevented Motion Photos from being deleted from Drive when you delete them in Photos

Tuesday, October 31st, 2017

Motion Photos debuted alongside the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL as a direct competitor to Apple's Live Photos. These Motion Photos are saved by default whenever you take a picture, allowing you to catch a glimpse of the background while the photo was being taken. But until a day or two ago, these Motion Photos would remain in your Google Drive library, even if you'd already deleted them through Photos.

Google is rolling out the new ‘Backup and Sync’ desktop client for Drive and Photos

Wednesday, July 12th, 2017

Google announced a new desktop app last month called "Backup and Sync." It's a replacement for both the desktop Google Drive and Photos apps, but it was delayed almost two weeks ago. Google has now announced that Backup and Sync is officially rolling out, but you don't have to wait for the update.

The Google Drive app in particular has always been clunky and slow to sync. Hopefully this update fixes some things.

Google announces ‘Backup and Sync’ for Windows and Mac, will replace desktop Google Drive client

Wednesday, June 14th, 2017

The Google Drive client for Windows and Mac is.. decent. It's a bit buggy, and at least on Windows, seems to disconnect every once in a while for no apparent reason. Back in March, we learned that Google was working on a new version called 'Backup and Sync,' because the company accidentally pushed an unfinished version to users which didn't work at all.

Now it seems like Backup and Sync is nearly ready for release.
