Surprise: DisplayMate deems the Galaxy S9’s display the best it’s ever seen, gives it “Excellent A+” grade

Thursday, March 1st, 2018

For as long as I can remember, each Samsung phone's release has been accompanied by a DisplayMate test proclaiming this new Samsung phone's screen to be the absolute best. Given just how good Samsung's AMOLED panels are, we can certainly understand this, but it's just interesting to see the same thing said every year. This time around, DisplayMate has awarded the Galaxy S9 an "Excellent A+" grade.

While the Galaxy S9/S9+ panels are physically the same size as those on the Galaxy S8/S8+, DisplayMate's Dr.

External monitor display size scaling is coming to Chrome OS

Tuesday, February 6th, 2018

Google shows no signs of slowing down when it comes to expanding the utility of Chrome OS as a platform. We're already convinced that the operating system can be used to do real work—at least, in our workflow here at Android Police—but more useful features are still being added with each new version. The latest addition to the Chrome OS Dev Channel is a "display size" setting for external screens.

Currently, only a few Chromebooks support proper display scaling on the internal monitor, but it's not actually user-facing.

Check out XDA’s incredibly detailed analysis of the Pixel 2 XL’s display

Friday, December 29th, 2017

Sometimes you don't want to read up on how someone "feels" about a product. Everything's subjective, of course, and it's good to combine multiple viewpoints, but once in a while, it's nice to just sit down and examine the raw data, that way you can come to your own conclusions. And Dylan Raga over at XDA-Developers just assembled an intense and in-depth analysis of the Pixel 2 XL's display that's worth a read.

New DisplayHDR certification defines standards for HDR displays on PCs

Tuesday, December 12th, 2017

Given that not all displays are equal—IPS is better than TN, HDR is better than non-HDR, some people prefer LCD, others prefer OLED—a certification system for what displays can do seems overdue. The display standards body VESA has (at least partially) filled that void with the newly-announced DisplayHDR standard, which defines the abilities of display panels used in notebook PCs and monitors for desktop PCs.

Rather like the standards for SD cards that define how responsive a card would be in a specific context—like V30 for recording 4K video, or A1 for supporting a particular minimum random I/O response—DisplayHDR defines measurable standards for display panels.

[Update: Fixed in DP2] Some Pixel 2 XL touchscreens are unresponsive near the edges, but a fix is coming

Monday, December 4th, 2017

Stop me if you've heard this one before: The Pixel 2 XL has another screen issue. Just a few days after we posted about the screen flashing when some owners unlock or lock their Pixel 2 XL, some of the device's owners are having difficulty with touch responsiveness near the edges of the screen.

Some Pixel 2 XL touchscreens are unresponsive near the edges, but a fix is coming

Stop me if you've heard this one before: The Pixel 2 XL has another screen issue. Just a few days after we posted about the screen flashing when some owners unlock or lock their Pixel 2 XL, some of the device's owners are having difficulty with touch responsiveness near the edges of the screen. The good news is that Google has acknowledged the issue and will sort it out in a future OTA update.

Some Pixel 2 XL screens are flashing when locking and unlocking

Wednesday, November 8th, 2017

An altogether very well-received phone, the Pixel 2 XL has gotten mostly glowing reviews for its minimal bezels and standout camera. Its display, however, has been widely criticised for a host of reasons, including washed out colors, significant blue shift when viewed at an angle, lines of dead or colored pixels, graininess, and light bleed, just to name a few. Now, reports are surfacing of yet another issue with the screen — as if the current ones weren't already enough.

Google acknowledges Pixel 2 XL display issue, is ’actively investigating’

Monday, October 23rd, 2017

If you keep your eye on Android news, and particularly if you have any interest in Google's latest hardware, it will be no surprise to you that the screen on the Pixel 2 XL isn't perfect. While every other aspect of the phone has received pretty much universal praise, the LG-made POLED display panel has been incredibly divisive.

Several different complaints have been reported, ranging from a blue tint when viewing the screen at an angle, screen burn-in or image retention, lines of dead or colored pixels, low light graininess, dull (if accurate) color profile, light bleed, and even a strange shadow arc.

Yo Google, you sure the Nexus 5X has an AMOLED display?

Tuesday, September 19th, 2017

File this under the quirky errors / wishful thinking category. The official android.com site has a list of devices including the Nexus 5X with detailed specs, but with one mistake: it lists it as having an AMOLED display instead of an IPS display.

The error was just brought to our attention by Redditor dbailyn, but it turns out it was spotted by another Redditor sekanato more than a year ago.
