Sphero ends production of licensed toys, including BB-8, Lightning McQueen, and Spider-Man

Friday, December 21st, 2018

Toy robot manufacturer Sphero has stopped making its Disney and Marvel licensed products after deciding that the return on the investment isn't strong enough. Products currently on shelves will continue to be sold and supported, but once they're gone, that's it.

The Colorado-based company had a three-year deal with Disney that led to remote control toys such as BB-8 and R2-D2 from Star Wars and Lightning McQueen from Cars. In our review of the latter, we found the $300 price tag to be too much for what you get, so it's no surprise Sphero thinks they are too expensive to produce.

Jam City announced today that the company is entering into a multi-year mobile game development partnership with Disney. This deal will not only grant Jam City the rights to develop titles around Pixar and Walt Disney properties, but the company has also acquired Disney's Glendale Games Studio to take over its operations.

Google Home can now add sound effects and music to story time with certain Disney children’s books

Monday, October 29th, 2018

Some of Google Home's best features are the ones that are just for fun, like playing the "I'm feeling lucky" game show, listening to different animal sounds, and asking for interesting facts. Google is expanding on that repertoire with storytelling sound effects for certain Disney stories. Parents in the US can activate the new feature by saying "Hey Google, let's read along with Disney." Their Home device will then listen along and play appropriate sound effects and music for the chosen story, which can be selected from a library of 11, with more to come.

PAC-MAN: Ralph Breaks the Maze combines classic arcade action with a few Disney properties

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018

There are already more than a few Pac-Man games available on Android, but are there any that combine Disney properties with everyone's favorite dot-eating arcade character? Well, there is now with the release of PAC-MAN: Ralph Breaks the Maze. It ties into the upcoming Disney movie Ralph Breaks the Internet, and despite what you may think, the game is actually pretty good.

Okay, so normally movie tie-in releases tend to be shallow shovelware that serves the purpose of advertising a particular movie to the mobile-gaming masses.

Disney is shuttering Star Wars: Rivals

Wednesday, September 12th, 2018

You know, I for one am not a fan of free-to-play cash grabs that take advantage of popular brands. There used to be a time when Disney released paid games on the Play Store that weren't designed to pilfer children's pockets with gambling mechanics, but those days are long gone. This is probably why I take so much pleasure in the recent announcement that Disney is shutting down Star Wars: Rivals before it was even officially released.
