LineageOS 15.1 announced with new Trebuchet launcher, customizable colors, and more

Sunday, February 25th, 2018

Many open-source projects, LineageOS included, live by the same motto - 'don't ask for an ETA.' Most developers of Lineage have other jobs and responsibilities, so large undertakings (like creating a new major update) take time. At long last, the waiting is over - LineageOS 15.1 is official, and it's coming to a device near you.

The team wrote a blog post about Lineage's transition to Oreo. As you might expect, most of the work involved Project Treble, the new AOSP component that separates low-level device drivers from the rest of Android.

LineageOS 13, based on Android Marshmallow, is now discontinued

Wednesday, February 14th, 2018

CyanogenMod 13, based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, first arrived in November 2015. It was soon switched to Android 6.0.1, and continued to be the main branch of CyanogenMod until version 14.1 was released one year later. After the CyanogenMod community re-organized into LineageOS, the distribution was renamed to LineageOS 13.

At this point, most of the devices that had LineageOS 13 have either been updated to v14.1, or dropped entirely (usually due to inactive maintainers).

Project Treble compatibility unofficially ported to Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, more devices likely to follow

Monday, February 12th, 2018

One of Android's biggest criticisms over the years has been how fragmented its version distribution is at any given time. At Google I/O in May last year, Google unveiled a plan to modularize the OS and make it easier to update. Project Treble, in short, separates out the base-level Android framework from the vendor implementation so OEMs are able to release OS updates without having to wait for chipmakers to update drivers.

Honor providing View10 devices to prominent custom ROM and kernel developers

Wednesday, January 31st, 2018

Now that Huawei's plans of selling phones on US carriers have fallen apart, the company appears to be trying something different - appealing to hardcore Android enthusiasts looking for inexpensive phones. OnePlus is easily the leader in that niche, after Google stopped selling its budget-friendly Nexus phones. The Honor View10 (Honor is a sub-brand of Huawei) is already targeting OnePlus, and now the company is helping community developers create ROMs, recoveries, and kernels.

Google’s Project Treble could start a custom ROM revolution

Saturday, November 25th, 2017

Android phone buyers have been begging Google for years to do something about the platform's typically slow updates. As of this month, Android 8.0 Oreo only has 0.3% market share among Android devices, Marshmallow (released in 2015) is still at 30%, and Lollipop (from 2014) sits at 27%. Google's latest attempt to solve this problem is 'Project Treble,' a major restructuring of Android that is part of 8.0 Oreo

I recommend reading the announcement post for all the details, but I'll briefly explain it here.

LineageOS adds support for Motorola Droid 4, 2015 NVIDIA Shield TV, and more

Wednesday, July 5th, 2017

When we last covered the LineageOS project, support for the Nexus 9 was added along with a few phones from Xiaomi. Since then, more devices have been added to the official builds, and there are a wealth of new features in the ROM. Without any further ado, let's take a look.

First, it might be best to go over some of the functionality added since our last post. You can now disable album art on the lockscreen, the sensitive numbers list has been expanded with entries for new countries, the alarm clock can now set a system profile when an alarm triggers, and the ROM's media codecs have been updated.

Netflix was just the start: Google Play Console lets developers exclude app availability for devices that don’t pass SafetyNet

Thursday, May 18th, 2017

Last weekend, a huge turmoil swept the root-enthusiast Android community as it was discovered then confirmed that the Netflix app was being blocked from showing up in search results on the Play Store for rooted devices. At the time, Netflix said it was using Widevine to block unsupported devices, but that made no sense to us: the app was still functional if it was sideloaded, it was only not showing up as compatible in the Play Store.

LineageOS adds support for GSM and Verizon HTC One M9, Moto Z, and more

Wednesday, April 19th, 2017

The LineageOS project has been working hard to add more features and support new devices. Since our last news roundup, version 14.1 of the custom ROM has been updated to Android 7.1.2, and some devices have been added to the official builds.

First, I'll talk briefly about the switch to 7.1.2. If you haven't been following our coverage of the update, it includes a new battery usage alerts list, as well as general fixes to Bluetooth and some other tweaks.
