Wednesday, April 18th, 2018

Buying Google's gadgets can be very difficult if you live in a country where they're not officially available. Overpriced black markets, questionable imports, and difficulty of finding support are some of the issues you face. But after today, that won't be the case for Android and Google fans in Singapore as the official Store is now launched in their country.

The Google Store in Singapore carries 6 products so far, but they're arguably the most interesting.

Google Home tips have started appearing on Chromecast, and not everyone’s happy about it

Tuesday, April 17th, 2018

Google has been working toward making the Chromecast home screen a bit more useful with features like weather and YouTube searches. Now, something new is showing up: Google Home tips. Although, some people prefer to think of these as "ads," and they are not pleased.

So far, we've seen a few reports of small banners at the bottom of the Chromecast home screen that alert the user to an app that works with Assistant voice controls.

[Deal Alert] Google Daydream (2017) is 50% off again at several retailers

Monday, April 16th, 2018

The Daydream View (2017) virtual reality headset was announced last October along with the Pixel 2 devices, bringing better lenses, a better fabric material, and a controller that matches its color. Ever since, it has dipped from its $99 MSRP price a few times, the last of which was a half-off at Best Buy in March. Now the offer is back, but it's not just Best Buy that is discounting it: the same $49 price is available on the Google Store and a few other retailers.

Etón Air4 is an expensive $499+ speaker with Chromecast and Apple Airplay

Thursday, April 12th, 2018

Etón is not a brand I'm familiar with and a quick look through the company's current products and Wikipedia page doesn't reveal too much aside from the fact that its products are aimed toward outdoor use and emergency preparedness. However, its new Air4 speaker is a very striking departure from all of that. It's a high-quality indoor speaker with a price that oscillates between $499 and $599 depending on where you look and it supports streaming through both Chromecast and Apple Airplay.

Overwatch League app gets Chromecast support for match livestreams

Wednesday, April 11th, 2018

If you've been following the Overwatch League (and its associated player drama/suspensions), then odds are that you're one of the tens to hundreds of thousands of people watching it via Twitch, but that isn't the only way to get your fix. The official Overwatch League app can also sling live broadcasts, and now it's been updated with Chromecast support.

There's one unfortunate hiccup to this news, though. Only live matches can be pushed to your Chromecast, watching older recorded/archived videos won't present the option.

Chrome will soon finally support casting local files

Wednesday, March 28th, 2018

If you've ever used Chrome's casting functionality, you've likely come across one of its more frustrating shortcomings. While it works great for casting an online video, a tab, or even your entire screen, Chrome simply cannot cast a local audio or video file natively, forcing you to resort to using a third-party extension or standalone app. Fortunately, the Chrome team is currently experimenting with adding the ability to cast local files directly from within the browser, according to the well-known Googler and 'Chromium evangelist,' François Beaufort.

Plex updates Chromecast interface with a fresh look, better slideshows, and more

Tuesday, March 20th, 2018

It was a big deal some years back when Plex added Chromecast support. Google's Chromecast platform has only gotten more useful since then, and now Plex's Chromecast UI is getting an overdue revamp. The new interface looks nicer, but it also comes with functional improvements like better slideshow support and subtitle resizing.

These changes apply when using a device like your phone or PC to cast content to a Chromecast or another Cast-enabled device.

Amazon still isn’t selling the Chromecast, nearly three months after initial announcement

Friday, March 2nd, 2018

Google and Amazon have been in a feud of sorts for years, starting when Amazon pulled the Chromecast and Nexus Player from its online store in 2015. The war culminated late last lear, when Amazon added a YouTube client to the Echo Show without Google's permission or involvement, leading Google to remove YouTube from the Fire TV and Echo Show altogether.

Perhaps as a way of mending its relationship with Google, Amazon announced in December of last year that it would once again stock the Chromecast.
