Amazon Music app adds Chromecast support

Tuesday, November 14th, 2017

Amazon and Google's relationship over the past few years has been nothing short of an epic love-war popcorn-worthy chess battle. Amazon removes Chromecasts from its store, Google disables YouTube on Echo Shows, Amazon removes the Prime Video app from the Play Store then for some reason returns it. Now in one surprisingly nice move, Amazon has added Chromecast support to its Music app, maybe finally realizing that locking users out of certain functions or devices doesn't do it any good.

B&O introduces the compact Beoplay M3 speaker with Chromecast and Airplay, at $299

Friday, November 10th, 2017

Bang and Olufsen (B&O) makes some high-end audio products. Some would say overpriced, some would argue that the design, materials, and audio quality justify the premium price tag. B&O's latest venture into streaming speakers is reminiscent of Sonos, but the company is being more open about its connectivity standards. As an example, the newly announced Beoplay M3 speaker supports Chromecast (thus Google Assistant/Home), Airplay, Bluetooth, and Beolink Multiroom, so you can choose whichever protocol works best for you.

Nest camera integration with Google Assistant is already live

Thursday, October 5th, 2017

One of the coolest demos in Google's event yesterday came during the Nest section when the presenter used an Assistant command to beam a camera feed to the big screen. A lot of the things Googled showed off aren't available yet, but this one is. You might need to do a little setup, though.

The Nest-Assistant integration is live, but not all Nest accounts will work right away. If you have a Nest Thermostat on your account, you'll most likely need to unlink and re-link your Nest account in Assistant.

You can now turn on and off your Chromecast-connected TV with a Google Home command

Thursday, October 5th, 2017

It's the little things you guys. Sometimes, you're sitting in the living room and you just want to turn on your TV without reaching for that remote. Sure, you can ask Home to play something on your Chromecast, which will automatically turn the TV on, but then it'll start playing something while maybe you just wanted to see those pretty backdrops. And forget about turning the TV off, that just didn't work.

You can now pick a preferred TV/speaker for media playback with the Google Home

Thursday, October 5th, 2017

Ever since the Google Home was first released last year, you could use voice commands to start media playback on a Chromecast-enabled TV or speaker. For example, you could use commands like "Play The Office on the living room TV" or "play music from Coldplay on the kitchen speaker." Now Google is making that slightly easier, with the ability to pick a preferred device for media playback.

We first spotted this in a teardown back in July, but it looks like the feature is just now going live.

Today's Google event isn't just about new Google-branded products. The company announced today that Nest cameras would have deeper integration with the Google Home and Chromecast.

On the event stage, Google showed off new voice commands that can be used in conjunction with a connected Chromecast. For example, asking your Home "Who's at the front door" will display a Nest camera feed on a connected TV. You'll also be able to use commands to record video clips.

Google has sold over 55 million Chromecasts and cast devices

Wednesday, October 4th, 2017

Google's event is in full swing, and the company's been talking up its recent milestones. The announcement that there are over 55 million Chromecast devices out there is a biggie, though. Guess the device has become pretty ubiquitous.

The statement also came with the news that Google WiFi is the best-selling mesh networking product. I haven't had a chance to try that out just yet, myself, but I'm not sure that I could live without my Chromecast anymore.

You can now assign each Google Home speaker to a specific room

Wednesday, October 4th, 2017

If you use Google Home to control your smart home gadgets such as lights and thermostats, you'll probably be aware that you can assign them to different rooms in the house. That way you can turn multiple devices off or off with a single command, by saying "turn off the living room," for example. Until now, Google Home speakers themselves couldn't be added to a room, which didn't make any sense.
