Tuesday, July 17th, 2018

Last week, Cody spotted a change in the Google Home app for Chromecasts: the Backdrop feature was renamed to Ambient Mode. However, at the time, there was nothing functionally different. Ambient Mode organizes the settings in a new way. First, you have your different sources grouped into three categories: Photo frame, Art gallery, and Experimental.

It's been a long road for Deezer's support on Google Home. Now, it has finally crossed the Atlantic and become available in the US and Canada. It also came to Australia and Italy.

If you live in one of these countries and head over to your music providers in the Google Home app, you should see Deezer among the potential music services you can link.

Google Home and Chromecast can leak your location, but a fix is on the way

Monday, June 18th, 2018

Google Homes and Chromecasts around the world will be quietly updated in the coming weeks with a patch for a rather serious issue. According to security researcher Craig Young from Tripwire, these devices have a vulnerability that could allow an attacker to find your geographic location if you have a Home or Chromecast on your network. That's a big problem, and Google almost didn't believe Young's bug report.

The issue is that Home and Chromecasts don't require authentication for commands that come over your local network.

S?LIS SO-7000 review: One of the best Chromecast speakers around

Monday, May 28th, 2018

A few months ago, I took a look at both of SōLIS' entry-level Chromecast speakers, the SO-3000 and SO-6000, which impressed me with their sound quality and designs; they featured Cast, Bluetooth, and line-in support. But pricing felt a little steep, especially for the SO-6000.

This time around, I took a look at the next step up in SōLIS' product line: the SO-7000. This cube has all of the benefits of its cousins, but it packs more of a punch, especially with the bass.

Netflix now lets you skip boring intros when watching shows on a Chromecast

Friday, May 18th, 2018

As much as I love The Office's intro, it does slow down marathons a bit. Netflix introduced the ability to skip TV intros last year, but the feature didn't work while using a Chromecast or similar device. Thankfully, that has finally been fixed, so you can save precious seconds on your next BoJack Horseman marathon.

When streaming shows to a Chromecast, or other other cast-enabled device, the Android app now shows a button to skip the intro at the bottom of the screen.
