Google testing new Cast UI for Chrome, with new icons and a source toggle

Thursday, December 13th, 2018

The original function of the Chromecast was to mirror a Chrome tab to your TV. Even though it's hardly ever used for that purpose anymore, now that most media services support native casting, the feature has always left room for improvement. Google is now testing a new Cast interface for Chrome, with updated device icons and a source toggle.

The new interface is already rolling out to some users on the Beta channel, but you might also be able to force it by enabling the #upcoming-ui-features option in chrome://flags.

YouTube Kids support comes to Google Home, Cast TVs, and Smart Displays

Wednesday, October 24th, 2018

Let's face it: some corners of YouTube are just plain disturbing. To save our children from seeing the dankest of memes before they're ready, YouTube Kids exists — a platform where you can set limits on what sort of content your little one can see, how long they can watch videos, and even whether or not they can use the search bar. Google is now broadening YouTube Kids' reach by expanding support to Google Assistant-enabled Smart Displays, Google Home, and Cast TVs.

Google Podcasts finally starts rolling out Cast support

Monday, September 17th, 2018

Google Podcasts received a fair amount of criticism at launch for a variety of valid reasons, but the biggest issues stemmed from a lack of support across Google's ecosystem. The app, somewhat absurdly, launched without proper Android Auto or Cast support — and offered little else to recommend it, including no option for creating podcast playlists. Now, after addressing the Android Auto issue, the app is beginning to roll out support for Cast.

Netflix now lets you skip boring intros when watching shows on a Chromecast

Friday, May 18th, 2018

As much as I love The Office's intro, it does slow down marathons a bit. Netflix introduced the ability to skip TV intros last year, but the feature didn't work while using a Chromecast or similar device. Thankfully, that has finally been fixed, so you can save precious seconds on your next BoJack Horseman marathon.

When streaming shows to a Chromecast, or other other cast-enabled device, the Android app now shows a button to skip the intro at the bottom of the screen.

Google Play services 11.9.75, which fixes Cast device Wi-Fi issues, has hit stable

Thursday, February 1st, 2018

Last month it was revealed that Google Cast-supported devices were causing networking issues for many. After the story garnered widespread attention, Google quickly pushed out a fix in the form of the Play services 11.9.74 beta. Affected parties were able to manually install this version or jump into the testing program to get it, and it was supposed to fix the issue. But, that was a beta release that not everyone received (since betas are opt-in).

Play Books v4 prepares to launch audiobooks with support for casting and Android Auto [APK Teardown]

Saturday, January 20th, 2018

Play Books just hit version 4 yesterday, but on the surface it looks like very little has changed. There are a couple of relatively small tweaks here and there, but it wouldn't appear to deserve a big version jump. However, this is the version that will launch audiobook support. A teardown shows that there's a ton of new functionality hiding below the surface and it's all just waiting for Google to flip the switch.

[Update: Beta update rolling out, downloads] Google says a fix is coming on January 18th for Wi-Fi problems associated with Cast devices

Friday, January 19th, 2018

A few days back we reported that the Google Home Max (among other Cast-enabled devices) might be connected with some recent reports for widespread Wi-Fi troubles. Google has indirectly responded to this issue in a page on the Device Support section for Google Home support, in which the company acknowledges the existence and cause of the problem, promising a fix tomorrow.

This particular issue has picked up a lot of traction in the news, having been reported on by outlets covering a range from Engadget to The Sun, so it's not just a niche problem.
