Arlo Ultra launch is a mess: Suspended sales, cloud storage price hikes, and persistent bugs

Friday, February 8th, 2019

Arlo announced the Arlo Ultra 4K camera system late last year, and we got a closer look at the cameras during CES in January. Arlo needed a hit after a disappointing fourth quarter, but the Ultra cameras aren't off to a great start. Best Buy has apparently halted sales of the cameras following negative reviews and customer complaints.

Like past Arlo cameras, the Ultra is entirely wireless. You can mount the cameras wherever is convenient without worrying about running power cables.

Former Netgear subsidiary Arlo has started shipping its new 4K Arlo Ultra camera system, which includes a new body design. That's not the only physical change. All Arlo cameras until now have been white, but it looks like the Arlo will offer a black version as well.

The Arlo Ultra housing is a bit flatter and more cylindrical than the Pro and Pro 2 cameras. In addition to the higher resolution sensor, Arlo Ultra has an integrated spotlight and a wide-angle lens that protrudes slightly from the face.

The camera records 1080p video (obviously) at 15 frames per second with a 112-degree field of view. It's also got infrared night vision to keep tabs on things in the dark.

Samsung’s new camera sensor was made for ‘full-screen display smartphones’

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2019

Ahead of the anticipated announcement of the company's new Galaxy S10 phones, Samsung has announced that it's developed a fresh camera sensor that could make its debut in the devices. The new ISOCELL Slim 3T2 is a 20-megapixel sensor built that sports "the smallest form factor in the industry," purpose-built for use in devices with minimal bezels.

The 3T2 measures just 5.1 millimeters diagonally. Squeezing all those pixels into such a tiny space means they're really small; just 0.8µm.
