AT&T starts rolling out updates with fake ‘5G Evolution’ icon, just as promised

Saturday, January 5th, 2019

Most of you are probably familiar with AT&T's very misleading initiative to dub an enhanced version of 4G LTE "5G Evolution." As the top comment on that post predicted, the "5G E" icon has begun to roll out very quickly, already hitting both the LG V30 and Samsung Galaxy S8 active less than two weeks after the announcement.

The Galaxy S8 active's "5G E" icon is bundled with a December 2018 security patch.

AT&T to start using a fake 5G indicator on LTE phones

Friday, December 21st, 2018

Technology is complicated enough for the average consumer, but carriers have a long and storied history of manipulating terminology to make it even harder to follow. Years ago, carriers like T-Mobile and AT&T jumped the gun on 4G by rebranding their 3G HSPA+ networks as "4G." Now, AT&T is doing the same thing as we move on toward 5G. After announcing 5G Evolution branding earlier this year, it's going to use a fake 5G icon on LTE phones.

Uber and Uber Eats apps updated with new branding

Thursday, September 13th, 2018

It's only been two days since Uber hired its first chief marketing officer, former Coca-Cola exec Rebecca Messina, but it looks like she's gotten straight to work. The Uber and Uber Eats apps have been updated with new logos that use a proprietary new font called 'Uber Move.'

Uber told AdWeek that the previous logo was ditched because some customers weren't associating it with the company. In fact, some drivers had even been using the opposite side of their windshield decals to display the 'UBER' text in lieu of the rather odd-looking logo.

LG is adding ‘ThinQ’ branding to the year-old G6 because why the hell not

Thursday, May 17th, 2018

LG's mobile business has been doing some questionable things lately. It all began to go downhill when it released a V30 with slightly better specs as the "V30S ThinQ" for a whopping $929.99 (which it has since lowered by $200). It then updated the existing V30 with "ThinQ" branding as well. The company now seems to be doing the same thing with the G6 for some reason, despite the phone being over a year old.

Notification suggests Android Wear could be renamed ‘Wear OS’

Saturday, March 10th, 2018

Android Wear may be changing its image, according to a Reddit post by user H3x0n. Per the post, during the setup of an Android Wear watch (the post didn't specify which), H3x0n was greeted with both a new icon and an unfamiliar name for the operating system.

The icon, a stylized "W" in Google's trademark color scheme, looks like a mix between the Google Assistant icon we're familiar with and the logo of Warner Bros.

Google Pay branding is starting to replace Android Pay in the app and on the web

Tuesday, February 20th, 2018

Alternative title: Android Pay is dead, long live Google Pay

Since mentions of 'Google Pay' and 'G Pay' started popping up at the turn of the year, we knew some changes were likely afoot. Then the new marks started rolling out more widely, as Google officially announced that it was unifying its payment branding.

Today seems to be the day we say goodbye to Android Pay for good, as the website is now redirecting to the Google Pay site, four new YouTube videos have been released, and the Android Pay and Google Wallet apps are getting rebranded.

The Galaxy S8 will have no external carrier branding, even on Verizon and AT&T

Thursday, April 20th, 2017

No matter how you feel about Samsung and the Galaxy S8/S8 Plus, you have to admit they're really, really pretty phones. The curved display and sleek frame are incredibly well-designed compared to most other devices, and the GS8 will stand out in one other unexpected way—there's no carrier branding. Even Verizon and AT&T have been persuaded not to stamp their logos all over the phones.

Carriers have gotten a little more reserved in the last few years.
