Android Q timeline: Six betas planned, final release in Q3

Today is Android Q day, and behind the scenes we're frantically flashing this new beta to see what's new, but plenty of new details have been revealed officially. Among the most important is the timeline for beta releases going forward. Six beta releases are planned in total, with the final release due in Q3.

Google has also added details to its enumerated list of releases, indicating what sort of features might make it into each:

  • Beta 1 (initial release, beta)
  • Beta 2 (incremental update, beta)
  • Beta 3 (incremental update, beta)
  • Beta 4 (final APIs and official SDK, Play publishing, beta)
  • Beta 5 (release candidate for testing)
  • Beta 6 (release candidate for final testing)
  • Final release to AOSP and ecosystem

As you should probably have guessed, today's release is Beta 1.

Android Q beta is rolling out today, supports all Pixel phones

Some corners of the internet expected Android Q to arrive in beta form on Monday, but that didn't happen. Today is the day, though. Google has confirmed Q is rolling out to all Pixel phones, even the first gen devices. Get ready to dig into the new Android.

Details are still scarce—Google's blog post hasn't gone live yet. However, we're expecting Android Q to feature more foldable features, enhanced privacy tools, changes to the share menu (finally!), and a new floating settings panel UI.

Paranoid Android announces Pie Beta ROMs, starting with Xiaomi Mi 8, Mi Mix 2S, and Poco F1

Popular custom ROM maker Paranoid Android came back from the dead in 2017 and has just announced its long-awaited first Android 9 Pie beta builds, with initial availability for a handful of Xiaomi devices. PA is also changing the way it develops its ROM to include Generic System Images (GSI) which should allow support for a greater number of devices.

The first phones to get the Paranoid Android Pie Beta are the Xiaomi Mi 5, Mi 6, Mi 8, Mi Mix 2S, and Poco F1.

Latest Drive beta lets you share docs with non-Google account holders

Easy collaboration is a key strength of Google Drive, allowing multiple users to view, comment on, and suggests edits to documents. Until now, it's only been possible to share a Doc, Sheet, or Slide with someone who has a Google account. A new Drive beta feature is going to change that.

G Suite users on the beta will now be able to share a document with an external collaborator who doesn't have a Google account at all.

Android 9 Pie arrives on the OnePlus 5 and 5T with Open Beta 20/22

It has taken OnePlus a bit longer than expected to bring Android 9 Pie to the OnePlus 5 and 5T, but the wait is over — if you're willing to use beta releases, anyway. Open Beta 22 for the OnePlus 5 and Beta 20 for the 5T are now available, which are based on Android Pie.

Here's the full changelog for the Open Betas:

  • System
    • Updated system to Android™ 9.0 Pie™
    • Brand new UI for Android Pie
    • Brand new navigation gestures (this is only for 5T)
    • Updated Android security patch to 2018.11
    • Optimizations for background app process handling
  • Do Not Disturb mode
    • New Do Not Disturb mode with adjustable settings
  • Communication
    • UI Improvements for emergency rescue
    • Optimized UI for speed dial and calling interface
    • Now able to assign a specific SIM for a specific contact or group of contacts when using dual SIM
  • Parallel Apps
    • Added support for more apps (Telegram, Discord, IMO, Uber, OLA) in parallel apps
  • Weather
    • Now able to switch dynamically to your current location
    • Display more suggestions when the search function is used
    • Fixed an issue that prevented the app from refreshing when the location is changed
    • Fixed an issue that resulted in some users being unable to find certain locations

The software experience should be roughly identical to that of the OnePlus 6T, since that phone is already running Android Pie.
