Google app testing ‘Top Apps’ section resembling Google Go interface

Thursday, August 16th, 2018

If you feel like you're pretty comfortable with the navigation in the Google app, you'll be sad to learn that a shake-up might be on its way. Google introduced bottom tabs last year, settling on five options: Home, Upcoming, Search, Recent, and a hamburger menu leading to more. The latest UI being tested replaces Recent with a new Top Apps section that looks like it's been borrowed from the Google Go app.

Fortnite beta invites are going out, as first wave comes to non-Samsung phones

Tuesday, August 14th, 2018

As per an official Tweet yesterday evening from Epic Games, the developer has clearly stated that it has opened up the Fortnite Android Beta to more devices. This is only the first wave of invites, but more will surely follow. So if you haven't signed up yet, make sure to navigate to Epic's website to get on the waiting list.

Last Friday our own Artem Russakovskii discovered that both the installer and game would boot on his Pixel 2 XL, but once the title was fully installed on his device it would not allow his account into a match without an official invite tied to it.

[Update: Now on Play Store] Poweramp v3 beta shows off a complete redesign of the classic music player

Monday, August 13th, 2018

In the early days of Android, it was tough to find a good music player. Let's face facts—Android itself was pretty ugly, and developers didn't have the best tools. However, Poweramp offered a slick UI (for the time) and ample features. The app has fallen by the wayside over time, but there's a new beta build that gives Poweramp a much-needed fresh coat of paint.

Google Phone v23 brings an updated Material UI to match Contacts’ [APK Download]

Friday, August 10th, 2018

Google Contacts got a UI revamp two days ago, and we'd been wondering when the Google Phone would get a matching refresh. The wondering ends now - Phone v23 beta has just been released, giving us a look at the latest and greatest phone interface from Google.

left: Old. right: New.

As with the Contacts refresh, there don't appear to be any changes in functionality. There are still four tabs on the bottom, and the settings menu appears to have the same contents.

Hands on with Android 9 Pie’s Digital Wellbeing: Phone control for those without self-control

Tuesday, August 7th, 2018

As they say, "If you haven't got your health, you haven't got anything." Most of us probably don't realize that there's more to the subject than just diet and exercise, and how we use our phones can have an impact, too. Once upon a time, our work/life balance was separated by real, physical distance, but thanks to the magic of mobile phones, we can all carry our work home with us in the form of life-interrupting notifications.

Digital Wellbeing beta opens for Pixel owners on Android 9 Pie, sign up here

Monday, August 6th, 2018

Today is P-Day, ground zero for the Android 9 phone invasion, but Google has an extra health-related surprise waiting with Pie's release. The Digital Wellbeing features shown off by Google at I/O didn't make an appearance during the Android P developer previews, but a test for the health-related tools has just launched. Interested Pixel-equipped parties can enroll in the beta starting today.

In case you don't remember, the features in Google's new Digital Wellbeing suite are meant to encourage what CEO Sundar Pichai called "JOMO," for the "joy of missing out"—as opposed to the modern social terror of "FOMO"/fear of missing out.

Enpass 6 Beta for Android brings multiple vault support, dark theme, secure sharing, more

Monday, July 23rd, 2018

Over the past couple of years, Enpass has been my password manager of choice (for many reasons that I've listed repeatedly). The app is getting ready to move on from v5 to v6, with the biggest update it's ever seen so far. A beta of v6 was released for Windows last month, and now, the Android version is following suit.

The new Enpass6 is a separate Play Store listing as it's built from the ground up with a new architecture.

TCL is starting an invitation-only Oreo beta for the KEYone

Friday, July 13th, 2018

The BlackBerry KEYone launched a year ago with Android Nougat, and today it still runs Android Nougat. Oh sure, there have been regular security patches over the months, but the lack of an OS update after more than six months of Oreo availability is embarrassing. TCL is taking the first step toward making the OTA happen, though. There's an Oreo beta for the KEYone, but you need an invite.

If you're still using the KEYone and are itching for Oreo, you can sign up for the new Blackberry beta program hosted by Centercode.
