Mophie Powerstation AC review: USB Type C, 22000mAh, 110 Volts, 100 Watts, $200

Thursday, January 25th, 2018

Just ahead of this year's CES, Mophie announced a massive 22,000mAh battery capable of spitting both 30W USB-PD over Type-C and 100W over a standard AC outlet, all in a relatively dinky 7.5" x 4.5" x 1.1" package. It even had what looked like a swanky gray fabric shell, so our interest was certainly piqued. The only real potential drawback we noted at the time was the price. $199.95 is pretty serious cash for a 22,000mAh battery.

Many of you probably know about the Anker PowerHouse, a massive 434Wh battery that can be had for $499.99. It's still a giant brick of a battery, but if you just don't need 434Wh, this is the car battery-shaped battery for you.

The PowerHouse 200 offers a slightly sleeker look with 200Wh of power inside, which is about half of the original's capacity.

Google Duo v25 prepares to help users deal with a low battery and low volume [APK Teardown]

Thursday, December 21st, 2017

As we hit the last few days before Christmas, app updates from Google have gone from a firehose to a slow trickle. It's only natural that most of the developers don't want to ship any major updates right before their holiday plans for fear that they might be called in to fix a catastrophe. Hey, I've done it too. Nevertheless, there's a new version of Google Duo rolling out today. It probably comes as no surprise that this one isn't taking any unnecessary risks either.

Google makes Pixel battery life estimates more accurate with personalized on-device model

Thursday, November 23rd, 2017

If you own a Pixel and you've noticed that your battery life estimates have gotten more accurate in the past few days, that's not a coincidence. A Google product manager made an announcement yesterday regarding the new, smarter way that your Pixel will calculate your remaining battery life.

Pixels would previously make simple (and often incorrect) estimations on your usage. For instance, if you'd been using about 10% of your battery every hour for the past few hours, your phone would assume that you'd continue to use 10% of your battery every hour for its calculation.

Weekend poll: What do you consider to be ‘good’ battery life?

Sunday, October 22nd, 2017

Battery life is a highly subjective thing. For some, getting 3-4 hours of screen-on time is more than adequate, others don't consider anything short of 6 to be enough. Even though I'm probably on my phone more often than most (since it's kinda my job), I'm of the opinion that 4-5 hours is a pretty decent goal for manufacturers. Anything above that, while great to see, I just consider a bonus since I'm probably not going to use it before I plug in at night.
