Google partially rolls back Chrome 66’s autoplay changes

Wednesday, May 16th, 2018

With the release of Chrome 66 late last month, Google introduced new autoplay restrictions on both mobile and desktop Chrome. Sites could only start video and audio automatically if they had a high score on Chrome's 'Media Engagement Index,' which takes into account how often the user clicks on the site and watches media.

While this was a good change in theory, it received plenty of valid criticism.  For example, the new behavior broke countless web games and demos.

Chrome’s new autoplay requirements are breaking online games

Saturday, May 12th, 2018

For years, autoplaying video and audio on the web has been a constant source of frustration for users. Restrictions on autoplaying content have been in mobile browsers for years, partially due to the processing limitations of early smartphones, and partially to conserve mobile data usage. With the release of Chrome 66 late last month, Google introduced new autoplay restrictions on both mobile and desktop Chrome.

While most users (myself included) celebrated this change, there has been plenty of valid criticism.

YouTube is testing subtitles on its home page’s autoplay videos

Tuesday, March 20th, 2018

Back in October, YouTube began testing autoplaying videos on its Android app's home page. Fast forward to today and the feature still doesn't work on my devices, even though I have the option in settings, but it's working just fine for Artem. In fact, the Google gods even bestowed a new test upon him: subtitles in the aforementioned autoplaying videos.

It seems like Artem's been watching a lot of The Office lately.

YouTube v13.01 continues development on dark mode, may enable swipe-to-skip ads, and relocates autoplay setting [APK Teardown]

Friday, January 12th, 2018

YouTube just took a big version jump from v12.49 to v13.01, but you probably won't notice a lot of changes if you're just tapping around. In fact, this update appears to be pretty average for for most of YouTube's releases, which usually include a couple tweaks here and there, and sometimes some interesting material for a teardown – and this update has both. You'll find a new page in the Settings screen for autoplay options, and a teardown turns up some inspiring progress on a dark mode and possibly an adjustment to the ad-skipping experience.

YouTube is testing autoplay videos on the home page, but you can turn them off

Thursday, October 12th, 2017

Autoplaying videos are the devil. I can't say how many times in a single week I have to turn off the "autoplay" toggle on YouTube's queue so it doesn't move from the video I'm watching to what it thinks I want to see next. (Why isn't this a universal setting, YouTube, why?!) And now it looks like YouTube is testing another way to annoy you with autoplaying videos on your home screen.

Friday, September 15th, 2017

Autoplaying videos are among the most annoying web trends of recent years, bombarding you with unsolicited content when you least expect it. Chrome 63 (currently on the dev and canary channels) on desktop recently gave users the ability to mute certain websites permanently, and there's a special toggle in the works so you can ensure they stay quiet. In the upcoming Chrome 64, both on mobile and desktop, Google is introducing even stricter conditions that should stop unwanted audio from ever playing automatically.

Google will unify mobile and desktop autoplay behavior in Chrome 64

Friday, September 15th, 2017

Autoplaying videos are the scourge of the internet sometimes. Not only are they incredibly annoying, but they also waste precious data allowance and battery life. Chrome on desktop is pretty good at stopping videos from autoplaying unless they're muted, and in Chrome 64 for mobile Google will be introducing more consistent behavior that puts the user back in control.

The new rules will allow a video to play automatically if one of three conditions are met.

Google rolling out auto-playing video previews in Search

Saturday, August 19th, 2017

No one likes auto-playing video, but auto-playing previews can be helpful in certain cases. Google recently rolled out video previews on the YouTube desktop site, allowing people to hover over a video to see a glimpse of the contents. Now the company is rolling out video previews on its mobile Search.

Google Search already shows a carousel of related videos on some searches, especially ones with large amounts of video results (like tutorials, reviews, etc).
