Satellite view added to Google Maps on Android Auto head units

Thursday, July 12th, 2018

Google Maps has had a satellite view available for many years on multiple platforms, but for some reason, it never made its way to the Android Auto app - that is, until now. A reader sent in a tip showcasing satellite view while navigating with his Android Auto-equipped head unit, and it looks exactly as you'd expect.

What Android Auto's satellite view looks like in the cockpit of a Civic Type R going 45mph.

Android Auto now available on more Alfa Romeo and Volvo cars, coming soon to Dacia

Wednesday, July 11th, 2018

Android Auto is already supported on a wide variety of vehicles, but its spread will continue to grow so long as new cars are released. With this latest update to its site, Google's in-car system is now compatible with six new cars: two Alfa Romeos, three Volvos, and one Nissan (and two Nissan navigation systems). It's also coming soon to Dacia.

Here's the list:

  • Alfa Romeo
    • 2018+ Giulia
    • 2018+ Stelvio
  • Nissan
    • 2018+ Kicks
    • MM518D-L
    • MM518D-W
  • Volvo
    • 2019+ S60
    • 2019+ V60
    • 2018+ XC40

We already knew that the Giulia and Stelvio would be receiving Android Auto since they were previously stated as "coming soon" on the site, and they finally have.

Update Notes for Android Auto, Photos, Tasks, Play Music, Maps, and more (April 30, 2018)

Monday, April 30th, 2018

Every week, I examine somewhere in the neighborhood of a hundred app updates while looking for changes. The most interesting things turn into APK Teardowns or Download posts. Many of the remaining updates are unremarkable, amounting to a few bug fixes, routine updates to libraries, or even just pixel-level adjustments to layouts and images. However, there are usually a few updates that land somewhere in between. I don't want to spam readers with dozens of short posts, but I hate to ignore things that people might want to know about, so I'm going to wrap up the leftovers for a little weekend reading and call it Update Notes.

Android Auto lists five new aftermarket hardware partners

Thursday, March 29th, 2018

A few new certified hardware partners have appeared on the Android Auto website. All five new additions are aftermarket manufacturers—they make units that are installed after vehicles are purchased.

ASUS-owned UniMax announced its certification last month, but only recently appeared on Android Auto's site. Its listing there says Android Auto is compatible with stereo model F2-AVX7MX, but we weren't able to find that model number anywhere else.

[Update: Google confirms] Android Auto now allows phones to be unlocked while connected

Friday, March 16th, 2018

The Android Auto team has been known to put safety above all else. Most people agree that's the best strategy, but there have been some scenarios where users have pointed out that certain decisions may be over-reaching, or they might not account for common scenarios. One of the biggest points of contention since the launch of Android Auto has been a feature that effectively locks users out of their phones while connected to Android Auto.

Android Auto v3.0 prepares to launch Wi-Fi projection support [APK Teardown]

Friday, February 16th, 2018

Since the launch of Android Auto, drivers have been disappointed by the requirement to have their phones tethered to a cable. Not only was it inconvenient to plug in each time you got in the car, especially if you had a lot of quick stops to make, but it was also problematic when most cars didn't feed enough power through the designated port to keep phones from draining. Google finally let it slip that Wi-Fi support would be launched for Auto, and with the latest version, it looks like Google is just about ready to make it a reality.
