Friday, February 15th, 2019

Hangouts "Classic" is set to retire somewhere around the end of 2020, at which point users will be transitioned to Hangouts Chat and Meet. That leaves quite a bit of time that people will get to continue on with regular communications. Unlike Allo, Hangouts seems to be getting more attention now that there's a ticking clock on it. Google Crowdsource app given Material refresh and wants your selfies [APK Download]

Friday, February 8th, 2019

Google's effort to slightly update the look of its apps to match the latest Material Design guidelines (MD 2.0, if you will) continues apace. Crowdsource is the company's clever way of gamifying data collection for use in its many products, and it now features Google Sans and uses a lot more white (quelle surprise).

So it's no different to any other Material makeover, then. Google's custom typeface is spreading like wildfire, but that's no bad thing since it looks pretty nice.

Google’s K-2 reading practice app Rivet adds smartphone support

Friday, February 8th, 2019

We've recently told you about Rivet, a free reading-practice app for kids developed by Area 120, Google's experimental product division. Since the software is still in beta phase, it's continuously improving with better features and interface tweaks. The app was initially designed for tablets because they offer a better experience, and couldn't be installed on phones through the Play Store. The APK could still be sideloaded on handsets, though, but the interface didn't look pleasing compared to larger screens.

Tuesday, February 5th, 2019

Google's video chat app Duo has always been a pretty lightweight app, seemingly focused primarily on keeping the interface simple and prioritizing video and audio quality over flooding it with features. We've seen a few features slowly emerge over the last couple of years, and just about as many have been implemented and subsequently removed before launching. While we wait to see the eventual launch of a favorites list for contacts, there's another new feature in development that may liven up your video chats: Drawing mode.

Adobe Photoshop Express adds watermark resizing and enhanced vignette tools [APK Download]

Friday, February 1st, 2019

The main reason I don't use a Chromebook for my work here at AP is that I can't run full Photoshop on it. Proper watermarking is one use case that hasn't been possible in the Photoshop Express Android app, but the functionality has been greatly improved in the latest update — even though most people will have found another solution for this by now.
