Samsung Galaxy J4 Core is the company’s second Android Go phone

Friday, November 9th, 2018

Samsung announced its first Android Go device, the Galaxy J2 Core, back in August, and it's already back with a sequel. The company has quietly released information about the new J4 Core, and it's about what you'd expect from a follow-up to the unexciting J2 Core.

The Galaxy J4 Core packs a six-inch 720p display, an unspecified quad-core CPU, and five- and eight-megapixel cameras on the front and back, respectively.

Motorola releases kernel source for E5 Play Android Go edition

Thursday, October 11th, 2018

Earlier this year, Motorola released a special Android Go version of its lowest-end phone, the Moto E5 Play. It uses Google's Android Go platform, and is only available in a handful of European and Latin American countries. The phone might start to receive custom ROMs though, now that Motorola has released the kernel source code.

For those unfamiliar, the kernel source code allows developers to more easily create custom ROMs and recoveries for a certain phone.

Statistics for Android Go-related sales haven't been revealed, so it's tough to say how many of the phones have been sold. That makes it hard to tell if things are generally going well for the Android Go effort or not. But, a related milestone was just reached that could shed a bit of light on the upper-bounds of the project's success. Yesterday Google Go, an app which ships on Android Go-powered phones, hit 10 million installs on the Play Store.

ASUS Zenfone Live L1 review: The best phone you can get for $110, but you shouldn’t buy one (yet)

Wednesday, September 5th, 2018

We've been critical when it comes to Android Go-powered phones in the US, but Asus' new Zenfone Live L1 is set to change our mind. It's the first genuinely good experience I've had with the platform, and combined with a Snapdragon 425, 3,000mAh battery, and price-defying 5.5" 720p IPS display, I think it could be the best phone you can buy for $110. At least, it will be once Asus fixes a serious issue it has with randomly locking up, which the company promises with a future update.

Alcatel 1, the $80 Android Go phone, now available on Amazon

Wednesday, August 29th, 2018

If you need a cheap phone, and we're talking really cheap, then I'm sure that you've probably heard about Android Go and the accompanying ultra-budget phones. The Alcatel 1 just went up for sale on Amazon for a measly $79.99, but that low, low price comes at a cost (heh).

As you might recall, our very own Ryne suffered through using the Alcatel 1X not only for our review, but also to see how life with Android Go is.

Samsung announces its first Android Go phone, the Galaxy J2 Core

Friday, August 24th, 2018

We've been hearing about a rumored Android Go phone from Samsung for a while now, and alleged pictures even leaked last month. Samsung just officially announced the Galaxy J2 Core, the company's first phone running Android Go.

The specifications are... not great. The 5-inch TFT screen has a resolution of 540x960, and the Exynos 7570 processor is over two years old at this point. The battery isn't particularly large either. The software is based on Android Go, but it still has Samsung's usual system skin and custom apps.

Android Pie Go Edition is coming this fall

Wednesday, August 15th, 2018

The first release of Android Go Edition, based on 8.1 Oreo, was... not great. On the plus side, that means there's lots of room for improvement. Google today announced the next major release, named "Android 9 Pie (Go edition)," with storage improvements as the highlight feature.

The update obviously includes everything added in Pie, like gesture navigation, updated emoji, adaptive brightness, a new app switcher, and various UI improvements.

Samsung Internet Go leaks with none of the features people actually want [APK Download]

Tuesday, August 7th, 2018

Samsung is close to releasing its first Android Go phone. A dump of the device's ROM has already leaked, and it includes a few interesting apps - like a lightweight version of the Samsung Internet browser. The aptly named 'Samsung Internet Go' looks and feels exactly like the full browser, but lacks almost all the features.

The app seems to use Android's WebView to render pages, instead of including an entire copy of the Chromium engine.
