Asus Zenfone 5Z (ZS620KL) gets Android 9 Pie update

Wednesday, January 30th, 2019

Slices of Pie are reaching more and more devices. Ever since Android's latest version was released for Google's line-up, other companies like HMD, Samsung, Sony, Xiaomi, and OnePlus have joined in on the fun. Another OEM, Asus, started its Pie rollout with the Zenfone 5 earlier this month, and is now following up with the higher-end 5Z.

Although a Pie update for the 5Z began making the rounds a few months ago, it seems to have been a limited release for select devices or locales.

Asus rolls out Android 9 Pie to the Zenfone 5 (ZE620KL)

Thursday, January 3rd, 2019

It's been a few months since Google rolled out Android 9 Pie, which means that many OEMs with skinned UIs are gearing up to start updating their devices too. Samsung began its process with the S9 and S9+ on Christmas, and now Asus is following its footsteps with its Zenfone 5.

If you have a Zenfone 5 (ZE620KL), you should keep an eye out for an update notification. The OTA is being sent out now, though the rollout will happen in batches, so you'll have to be patient — or jam the check for updates button regularly and hope for the best.

Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite gets Android 9 Pie update

Wednesday, November 28th, 2018

After rolling out Android 9 Pie to the Mi A2 a couple of weeks ago, Xiaomi is now following up with the same update for its cheaper sibling, the Mi A2 Lite. The OTA for the stable release is starting to show up for users around the world, only two weeks after Xiaomi began testing it in beta.

According to our tipster, the new Pie update for the Mi A2 Lite brings gesture navigation like we've seen on the Pixel line-up, adaptive battery and brightness, App Actions and Slices integration in the launcher, all the privacy-centric features of Pie such as restricting access to the mic and camera for idle apps, and more.

[Update: Older Pixels] The Pixel 3 and 3 XL have a drawing app Easter egg

Tuesday, November 6th, 2018

Google's history with Android Easter eggs goes all the way back to Gingerbread when it snuck a weird phone zombie painting into the OS. Ever since then, you've been able to tap on the version number to get a neat little animation or game. The Android Pie bonus was a little disappointing, but it's improved on the Pixel 3 and 3 XL. Those phones have a hidden drawing app Easter egg.

Chrome OS Canary brings Android 9 Pie to the Pixelbook

Sunday, October 21st, 2018

The Android subsystem has become an increasingly important part of Chrome OS, but it's still based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat. Some of the improvements in Oreo and Pie would be highly-beneficial for Chromebooks, like Picture-in-Picture, the updated emoji set, Vulkan 1.1, and mouse capturing. Now it seems Google is updating the Android subsystem straight to 9.0 Pie, skipping Oreo entirely.

Chrome Story and Chrome Unboxed report that Android 9 Pie is now live on the Google Pixelbook, but only on the Chrome OS Canary channel (the most bleeding-edge/unstable version of Chrome OS).
