Android 8.1 update caused some Pixel C tablets to factory reset, Google says it’s fixed

Sunday, December 10th, 2017

When a manufacturer releases a system update, there is a general assumption that the update will not break everything. If you have a Pixel C that hasn't received the Android 8.1 update yet (or you've been holding off), consider yourself lucky - many users discovered that the OTA triggered a factory reset.

Google released the final build of Android 8.1 earlier this week, and the update started to roll out to Nexus and Pixel devices worldwide (including the Pixel C).

Android 8.1 feature spotlight: Speed labels for open Wi-Fi networks are now displayed in settings

Friday, December 8th, 2017

While open Wi-Fi networks are nice to find, they can sometimes be so slow that you'd prefer to just use your precious mobile data. Google seems to agree with this, having implemented these Wi-Fi speed labels for open networks in Android 8.1 Oreo to let users decide whether they should connect to a certain unknown network.

Without having seen the feature in action, you might be confused (like Artem was) as to what exactly it does.

That's not all—devices in the developer preview that were running DP2 are also seeing an OTA update today.

So far, Pixel 2 and 2 XL devices are getting an OTA notification.

Android 8.1 feature spotlight: DP2 corrects hamburger emoji, puts cheese above the patty

Wednesday, November 29th, 2017

Despite having served burgers with cheese below the patty at the Googleplex a few weeks ago, the company has fixed the hamburger emoji in Android 8.1 Developer Preview 2. A few other emojis have received mild overhauls as well.

Emojipedia, the emoji experts of the Internet, discovered these changes. The folks there created some great graphics depicting the changes. For the burger emoji, nothing aside from the cheese slice's relocation (and its shadow) has changed.

Latest Gmail and Maps versions have white/inverted nav bars on Android 8.1

Tuesday, November 28th, 2017

White navigation bars are nothing new, with LG phones having had them as options for many years and Samsung recently making them the default to reduce burn-in on its Galaxy phones. Now they're becoming abundant in Google phones with the introduction of Android 8.1 Oreo, both for aesthetic effect and in an attempt to minimize burn-in. Their latest appearances on 8.1 are in Gmail and Maps, where they've found new homes.

Android 8.1 feature spotlight: Covering the proximity sensor no longer turns off ambient display

Tuesday, October 31st, 2017

The latest Android developer preview is filled with lots of incremental changes, many of which are thoughtful and useful. It wouldn’t be possible for Google to get everything right in a beta release, though, and this alteration seems to be more of a backward step.

Previously in Oreo, if you’d set ambient display to wake with a notification or with a double tap, it would shut off if the proximity sensor was covered.

Problems installing the 8.1 Android Beta Program OTA should be resolved

Tuesday, October 31st, 2017

In our post about Google pulling the Android 8.1 developer preview OTAs, many of you mentioned that you were also having trouble downloading the OTA from the Android Beta Program. Since the OTA downloads for sideloading had been pulled, that was the only way to move to  8.1 without an unlocked bootloader. Well, those problems should now be resolved.

In a post on the Google product forum related to the issue, earlier today a representative from Google let everyone experiencing the problem know that a new OTA should be rolling out now.

Google pulled the Pixel 2’s Android 8.1 developer preview factory images

Monday, October 30th, 2017

Looks like there are a few more hiccups to be found with Google's Android 8.1 developer preview. In addition to pulling all the OTA files, Google has also placed a hold on the developer preview factory image for the new Pixel 2, though images for other devices, such as the larger Pixel 2 XL, are still available. The explanation? A bootloader configuration issue.

According to the release notes for the developer preview, a problem with the bootloader on the Pixel 2 prevents things from working quite as they should.
