Android 8.1 Oreo rolling out to the Amazon Prime and retail Moto X4

Amazon's Prime Edition phones don't have ads anymore, but there is some Amazon bloat that can affect updates. However, Amazon and Moto have managed t keep the retail and Prime versions in sync. About a month after the Android 8.1 update hit the Android One Moto X4, the Amazon and retail versions are getting the OTA (version OPW28.2).

The phone already had Android 8.0, so there won't be many changes here.

Android-x86 Project releases first Oreo build (release candidate 1)

Running Android on your PC can be a surprisingly shady experience with emulators that spam you with ads or try to hide Bitcoin miners on your system. When in doubt, there's always the open source Android-x86 Project. It just so happens that Android-x86 just released a build of Android Oreo.

As the name implies, Android-x86 is a version of Android designed to run on computers with the x86 architecture. It usually runs behind official Android releases for several months, but now we have the first release candidate for 8.1 Oreo.

After a brief one-month beta period, OnePlus has now begun rolling out the latest stable version of OxygenOS 5.1.0 to OnePlus 5 and 5T devices. The version is based on Android 8.1 Oreo and includes April's updated security patch.

Essential didn't find much success selling a $700 smartphone, but it's doing better selling that same phone for $500 or less. The Essential Phone has improved with software updates, and it's currently running Android 8.1 Oreo. The company isn't taking too much time to pat itself on the back after getting Oreo out the door.

Generally speaking, updates remove bugs, but in the case of Google's 2016 Pixel XL, a new problem was introduced with the Android 8.1 update this January. When charging in certain circumstances, the OG Pixel XL will (dangerously) attempt to pull up to 40% more current than it has negotiated from the charger, repeatedly entering and leaving a charging state as the charger shuts off due to overcurrent protection.

Generally speaking, updates remove bugs, but in the case of Google's 2016 Pixel XL, a new problem was introduced with the Android 8.1 update this January. When charging in certain circumstances, the OG Pixel XL will (dangerously) attempt to pull up to 40% more current than it has negotiated from the charger, repeatedly entering and leaving a charging state as the charger shuts off due to overcurrent protection. So if you've noticed your Pixel XL recently flashing "charging rapidly" multiple times after being plugged into the stock charger, that's why. 

At first glance, the specific circumstances required to trigger the problem might seem unlikely, but if you're using the stock charger, they're guaranteed.

OnePlus 5T gets Android 8.1, February security patch, improved gesture navigation with Open Beta 4

The latest Open Beta for the OnePlus 5T brings Android 8.1, the February security patch, and a handful of other updates. This comes just a day after the OnePlus 5 got an almost identical set of updates in its latest Open Beta.

Android 8.1 is the star of the changelog here, of course. But there are a few other notable updates included in Open Beta 4 for the OP5T:

Upgraded system to Android 8.1 Oreo

Phone

  • Added New auto pick up gesture - answer incoming call by raising the phone
  • Added global roaming solution

Gaming mode

  • Added new optimizations in gaming mode for immersive gaming experience including
  • notifications blocking, power saving and pausing adaptive brightness

System

  • Added more clock styles for ambient display
  • Optimized full screen gesture support (this is only for 5T)
  • Updated Android security patch to 2018-02

OnePlus Switch

  • Supported data migration for application backup

The full-screen gesture support first appeared in the previous Open Beta build for the OP5T, which landed at the end of January.
