[Update: Now for ZC520TL] Asus ZenFone 3 Max (ZC553KL) gets Android 8.1 Oreo update

Wednesday, November 21st, 2018

Buckle up, Asus lovers and users, the ZenFone series is starting to get its Android 8.1 update and the first lucky device is the ZenFone 3 Max (ZC553KL). The two-year-old phone had already received Nougat 7.0 a year ago and an update to Zen UI 4.0 last December, but Oreo 8.1 is certainly a nicer milestone to cross and a sign of Asus' commitment to updating most of its product line.

Asus rolling out Android 8.1 Oreo to the ZenFone 4 Selfie

Friday, October 12th, 2018

Asus launched the ZenFone 4 Selfie last year, with the highlight feature being its dual 20MP front-facing cameras. The phone initially shipped with Android 7.1, but just like Asus promised a year ago, it's now receiving an update to Android Oreo.

The update has a software version of 15.0400.1809.405, and Asus says it will take about a week to roll out to all users. In addition to everything that Android 8.0 and 8.1 bring (the Selfie skipped 8.0), like adaptive icons and notification channels, the update also has version 5.0 of the ZenUI skin.

August 2018 Android platform distribution numbers are out: Oreo up another 2.5%, no sign of Pie (yet)

Friday, August 31st, 2018

August isn't even properly over, but already Google has pushed the month's platform distribution numbers, detailing the precise statistics of Android versions used across devices. Last month's statistics were of particular interest after the two-month gap, resulting in some inflated numbers, but this month things are back to normal. As always, newer versions of Android are up, and older versions are (mostly) down. Interestingly, Pie has yet to rear its head, despite launching earlier this month.

Google’s July 2018 Android platform update shows Oreo usage more than doubling since May

Monday, July 23rd, 2018

We get it, Google. You're busy with a lot of things, and platform distribution updates can fall by the wayside. Still, the most recent two-month gap was unusual. Someone finally had time to spit out new numbers today, and it's actually rather good news. Oreo usage is up to 12.2% across both versions, which is more than double where it was back in May.

This market share for Google's latest OS version isn't objectively good, but it's good for a new version of Android.

Nokia 1 review: Stepping into 2018 with hardware from 2011

Saturday, June 30th, 2018

Over the past year or two, HMD Global has ushered a revival of the Nokia brand with stock Android software under the hood. But perhaps none of the smartphones it has released has been more reminiscent of the Nokia of yore than this Nokia 1 — a device that looks like it took a time machine from Espoo in 2011 to 2018, with a quick detour in Mountain View for a fresh coat of Android 8.1 paint.

Amazon's Prime Edition phones don't have ads anymore, but there is some Amazon bloat that can affect updates. However, Amazon and Moto have managed t keep the retail and Prime versions in sync. About a month after the Android 8.1 update hit the Android One Moto X4, the Amazon and retail versions are getting the OTA (version OPW28.2).

The phone already had Android 8.0, so there won't be many changes here.

Android-x86 Project releases first Oreo build (release candidate 1)

Monday, June 18th, 2018

Running Android on your PC can be a surprisingly shady experience with emulators that spam you with ads or try to hide Bitcoin miners on your system. When in doubt, there's always the open source Android-x86 Project. It just so happens that Android-x86 just released a build of Android Oreo.

As the name implies, Android-x86 is a version of Android designed to run on computers with the x86 architecture. It usually runs behind official Android releases for several months, but now we have the first release candidate for 8.1 Oreo.
