Android platform distribution numbers updated for October, Pie still missing

Sunday, October 28th, 2018

Google's official Android distribution numbers give us an insight into which OS versions are still being used, and serve as a visual representation of the platform's fragmentation. The stats have just been updated again for October, and Android 9 Pie is still nowhere to be seen.

The numbers below were gathered over a seven-day period, ending on October 26th (any versions with less than 0.1% usage are not included):

Android version stats, October 2018

If you'd rather see a visual representation, here's this month's Pie-less pie graph:

Every version older than 8.0 Oreo dropped in usage this past month, with Android Gingerbread back to 0.2% (it was 0.3% in August and September).

Google posts September’s Android platform distribution numbers, still no Pie

Sunday, September 30th, 2018

In what is becoming a tradition, Google has published new Android platform distribution numbers for September before the month is even over. In fact, Google bumped the numbers once in the middle of September, which is a bit peculiar. Whatever the motivation, it wasn't to show off the impact Android 9 Pie has made, as the latest version of Android is still apparently sitting below the 0.1% threshold for inclusion.

The numbers below were gathered from the Play Store over a 7-day period ending on September 28th.

August 2018 Android platform distribution numbers are out: Oreo up another 2.5%, no sign of Pie (yet)

Friday, August 31st, 2018

August isn't even properly over, but already Google has pushed the month's platform distribution numbers, detailing the precise statistics of Android versions used across devices. Last month's statistics were of particular interest after the two-month gap, resulting in some inflated numbers, but this month things are back to normal. As always, newer versions of Android are up, and older versions are (mostly) down. Interestingly, Pie has yet to rear its head, despite launching earlier this month.

Verizon Droid Maxx 2 updated to… Android 7.0 Nougat

Thursday, February 8th, 2018

The Moto X Play was released in 2015, as a larger version of the X Style with a much bigger battery. In the United States, it was rebranded to the 'Droid Maxx 2,' a Verizon exclusive. Both models shipped with Android 5.1 Lollipop, and were later updated to Marshmallow. The Moto X Style received Android 7.1.1 Nougat in September of last year (at least in India), but the Maxx 2 has been stuck with 6.0.

[Update: Rolling out to everyone] Moto X Pure Edition finally gets Android 7.0 Nougat update in US after a year of zero updates

Thursday, November 30th, 2017

Ah, Motorola. You were once one of the most enthusiast-friendly OEMs, yet you've now sunken down to a level deeper than possibly any other major phone manufacturer in this regard. Just a few years ago, your Moto X-series of phones were the absolute best phones on the market with updates: the Moto X (2013) beat the Nexus 4 out to 4.4 KitKat, and the Moto X (2014) did the same to the Nexus 5 with 5.0 Lollipop.

BlackBerry confirms the Priv won’t get Android Nougat

Sunday, September 10th, 2017

The BlackBerry Priv was an odd device for many reasons. It was the first Android phone from BlackBerry, it was a flagship device with a physical keyboard, and it was the last phone manufactured in-house by BlackBerry. But as many Priv owners have probably been expecting, it won't receive further updates.

BlackBerry's General manager of Mobilty Solutions, Alex Thurber, confirmed the news during the 100th episode of the UTB Blogcast.

Verizon’s ASUS ZenPad Z10 gets upgraded to Android 7.0 Nougat

Tuesday, September 5th, 2017

Now that Android 8.0 Oreo has made its official debut, many of you are eagerly awaiting news on when your device will receive the latest and greatest from Google. But there are still devices that didn't even have last year's Nougat, like the ASUS ZenPad Z10 tablet on Verizon - that is, until now.

Our own Jordan actually wrote a review on the ZenPad Z10, and found it to be a pretty good tablet.

History says we're not huge fans of Verizon's Ellipsis tablet series, but our bad opinion of them is a little tamed by the fact that Verizon bothers to at least roll one major update to them. That's the case with the Ellipsis 8 HD, which launched with Marshmallow back in November of 2016, and is now getting its taste of Nougat.

Once the OTA has rolled out to your tablet, you will have software version SUN1_20A10 and Android 7.0.

ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 (Z500M) gets Android 7.0 Nougat OTA

Friday, June 30th, 2017

When Corbin reviewed the ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 — whoa, that's a mouthful — at the end of 2016, he called it the iPad Air running Android. The display and speed impressed him, but one of his major complaints was the software: both the added ASUS customizations and the fact that it ran Marshmallow gave him pause before recommending it. At the time, ASUS said that Nougat would come to the tablet, but wasn't sure when.
