The popularity of smart speakers may be increasing day by day, but there are still some people who believe the speakers are secretly recording and uploading every word that comes out of our mouths. You might have heard about a story involving Alexa on an Amazon Echo sending a private conversation to a random person on a contact list today, spooking more than a few people. Wednesday, May 23rd, 2018

I know this isn't exactly Android news, but it's Android-adjacent so I've decided it counts as a deal alert. Amazon is discounting two of its Kindle ebook readers by $30: the regular Kindle and the Kindle Paperwhite. With the price drop, these now start at $49.99 and $89.99, respectively, an all-time low that we've seen on very rare occasions before.

If you're wondering why I'm excited about this deal, let me tell you a short story.

OnePlus may have to come up with a new name for Dash Charge, thanks to Amazon

Sunday, May 20th, 2018

One staple of OnePlus phones over the years has been 'Dash Charge,' the company's proprietary fast charging technology. The OnePlus 3 was first to include it, allowing the phone to charge two-thirds of the battery in roughly 30 minutes. If you watched the OnePlus 6 announcement live stream, you may have noticed that Dash Charge wasn't mentioned once - and there's a reason for that.

As pointed out by reader Gregory, OnePlus has been moving away from the Dash Charge brand.

[Deal Alert] Sennheiser HD1 Bluetooth headphones with active noise cancellation falls to $314 ($186 off MSRP) on Amazon

Saturday, May 19th, 2018

Sennheiser's a well-established name in the audio industry, and it should come as no surprise that its active noise cancellation-equipped HD1 Bluetooth headphones, at a $500 MSRP, are very good. We saw the HD1s fall to $399 back in September of last year, then to $350 last December. But Amazon's current price of $314.04 is the lowest we've seen in some time, and the HD1s might be worth your consideration.

New Alexa skill lets you manage your Amazon Store Card by voice

Monday, May 14th, 2018

Tired of paying your Amazon Store Card bill by hand like a cave person? A new Alexa skill lets you manage your account—performing tasks like checking your balance, reviewing recent transactions, and paying your bill—by talking to your Echo device or app.

The Store Card skill will allow you to do pretty much anything with your card you'd otherwise do with traditional online account management. Amazon suggests trying the following phrases:

• "I want to pay my credit card bill."
• "Did my payment go through"
• "When is my payment due"
• "What is my minimum payment"
• "What did I recently buy"
• "What did I last buy"
• "How much money have I spent lately"
• "What is my recent activity"
• "What is my account summary"
• "How much available credit do I have"
• "What were my previous charges"
• "I need help”

Whether or not managing your account by voice is more convenient is subjective, but telling your digital assistant to pay a bill for you is at least novel.

How to keep paying $99 a year for Amazon Prime

Saturday, May 12th, 2018

Last week, Amazon announced it would be increasing the price of its yearly Prime membership subscription from $99 to $119 starting May 11 and June 16 for renewals. Prime has gradually become more expensive over time — the last time the price of a yearly subscription increased was in March 2014, from $79 to $99 — and while it's hard to argue that you're not getting plenty of value for what you're paying, no one likes to have to pay more for something.
