Saturday, December 8th, 2018

Worldwide sales of voice assistant smart speakers have seen tremendous growth in the last year alone, and the same can be said of the smart home sector as a whole. The technology underpinning the products will continue to get better as prices come down, and new categories will keep springing up, but there’s a lot out there worth investing in right at this moment.

With that in mind, and to ensure you won’t end up gifting (or being gifted) a dud this holiday season, we’ve put together a list of the best smart home devices you can buy.

Apple Music is coming to Amazon Echo devices in December

Friday, November 30th, 2018

Music streaming is a popular use for smart speakers, but the particular speaker you have dictates which services you have access to. Amazon's speakers are getting better in that regard in the near future, as the company has announced that Apple Music will be available on Echo devices later this year.

Availability of Apple Music is a fairly big deal, as it was previously only streaming on Apple's pricey HomePod speakers.

Forget Skynet: Big Mouth Billy Bass with Alexa is the tech hell we deserve

Wednesday, November 28th, 2018

Back in 2016, an absolute madman hacked a Big Mouth Billy Bass to speak using the Alexa API. It was weird. The soulless monsters at Gemmy Industries evidently took notice, though, and have engineered an official Alexa-powered singing fish to bring to market. What have we wrought?

You can inflict the Speaking Sensation on a loved one or mortal enemy for $39.99 — talk about a bargain. He connects to Echo devices over Bluetooth, and will dance to any music you put on.

Well, it's later in the year, and the new functionality is rolling out starting today. You can link your Skype account to your Alexa devices in the Alexa app.

To set up Skype calling, fire up the Alexa app on your phone, go to Settings, then Communication, then Skype.

Sunday, November 18th, 2018

Robotic vacuums are the sort of thing you can't live without once you get one. The convenience of routine automated cleaning saves tons of time, even if you should still give the process a bit of manual attention once in a while. Like everything else, the models with better features (like smart assistant support) tend to be more expensive, but ECOVACS' DEEBOT N79S combines a terrible name with Google Home and Alexa integration, and for the next eleven hours it's just $140 as an Amazon Deal of the Day.

Amazon’s new FireTV Recast and voice-controlled Microwave are now available

Wednesday, November 14th, 2018

Back in September, Amazon announced a slew of new hardware including Echos, FireTVs, and some other miscellaneous items. Many of these have already become available, but two outliers were still pending: the Alexa-controlled Microwave and the Fire TV Recast. Both are now in stock on Amazon and shipping.

The FireTV Recast is a DVR with either 2 tuners and 500GB of storage ($229.99) or 4 tuners and 1TB of storage ($279.99).

Alexa now supports adding smart home devices to groups using just your voice

Tuesday, November 13th, 2018

Smart home gadgets exist to make your life easier, but there's one way they almost universally make it harder: setup. It's easy to say "turn on the kitchen lights," but more complicated to get everything on the right Wi-Fi connection and grouped for that convenience. That is, unless you use Alexa. Turns out, you can add devices to groups with just your voice.

Of note, the current help page for creating device groups actually makes no mention of this functionality.

Monday, November 12th, 2018

As Black Friday approaches, tons of deal are already dropping, with Best Buy getting heavily involved in the discount season. Another good one we've spotted there is an Ecobee4 WiFi thermostat for $199, and while that's not that incredible by itself — we've seen it that low before — they're also chucking in a free Amazon Echo Dot (3rd gen) with it.

Altogether, that means you're saving $50 off the MSRP of the Ecobee4, plus a further $50 that you would usually have to pay for the Echo Dot.

You can pick up a refurbished 1st-generation Amazon Echo for just $50 ($30 off)

Monday, November 5th, 2018

A smart speaker is a sensible place to start when building a smart home setup. If you're not sure the cost of entry will be worth it, though, this deal may speak to you: Amazon has refurbished units of its first-generation Echo speaker for just 50 bucks, $30 off its historical price of $79.99.

The Echo launched at $180, which isn't an insignificant ask; $49.99 isn't nearly as steep. And while yes, this is the older Echo, the newer one doesn't have any advantage when it comes to functionality — it's pretty much the same product in a prettier package.
