Alexa’s Whisper Mode is now available, but you have to turn it on

Saturday, October 20th, 2018

One of my few remaining complaints with my Google Home is that it responds to questions at whatever the current volume is. If I was listening to loud music earlier in the day and forgot to turn down the volume later, my request to turn off the room lights results in "OKAY, TURNING OFF THE BEDROOM LIGHTS" being blasted. This is no longer a problem for Alexa owners at least, with the new 'Whisper Mode' feature.

But perhaps Facebook just couldn't wait any longer — after all, it was reportedly supposed to debut the new products earlier this year, but held off due to bad press from the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Polk Command Bar review: A decent, inexpensive soundbar with Alexa

Saturday, September 29th, 2018

Polk had the interesting idea of putting an Echo Dot into a soundbar, not only offering something that sounds better than your TV's speakers, but also adding Alexa to your living room. This all-in-one solution was dubbed the Command Bar, an unassuming soundbar that also happens to have what looks like an actual Echo Dot shoved in the middle.

If you want Alexa in your living room and to simultaneously improve your listening experience, then the Command Bar is for you.

Amazon Music Unlimited now available in Canada

Thursday, September 27th, 2018

Amazon Music Unlimited is now available in Canada. Yesterday, the e-commerce giant announced details of the expansion which includes a 90-day trial (4-month trial for residents of Quebec). The launch of the service also brings Alexa to the app (iOS and Android) and Echo smart speakers. Pricing for the service is a bit cluttered due to the different plan options and Prime status of the customer so let’s break it down:

  • For individual users:
    • Prime customers: $7.99/month or $79/year
    • non-Prime customers: $9.99/month
  • For families of up to six members:
    • Prime customers: $14.99/month or $149/year
    • non-Prime customers: $14.99/month
  • Single Device Plan: $3.99/month for one Echo device

Amazon Prime Music was already available in Canada, but it features only a small fraction of Unlimited’s music library, roughly 2 million songs versus 40 million. The other benefit of the Unlimited service is enhanced voice capabilities of Alexa, the company’s virtual assistant.

Lenovo is working on more tablets with Alexa integration

Saturday, September 22nd, 2018

Last year, Lenovo unveiled an add-on for its flagship tablet, called the 'Home Assistant Pack.' By docking a Lenovo Tab 4 into the Home Assistant Pack, it became an Alexa speaker. The company is now working on similar products, according to a recent announcement.

"Lenovo and Amazon are coming together to challenge the status quo in the tablet category with Lenovo Smart Tab," the company said, "a brand new line of voice-activated tablet solutions for the home." The tablet will become a fully-functional Echo Show when docked, instead of an audio-only Alexa speaker, like the Tab 4.
