Play Music v8.5 drops 2 MB of dead weight by unbundling Wear app and fixes app shortcut adaptive icons [APK Teardown]

Tuesday, November 14th, 2017

A new version of Play Music is available this afternoon and it's making a big leap in versions from 8.0 to 8.5. This update doesn't come with the redesign that had seemed likely after last month's visual refresh to Play Music on Android TV. But cosmetic touchups were in the cards as the adaptive icons for app shortcuts were fixed in this release. Additionally, Play Music lost some megabytes after unbundling its Wear app.

Hot on the heels of Allo's update over the weekend, Duo is now out with a new version of its own. Like Allo, its adaptive icon has been retouched to get rid of the infamous dinner plate look. While there aren't any other changes to the app on the surface, a teardown provides us with clues that Duo may support signing in with and being contacted through your Google account.

Pocket Casts updated with adaptive icons, Picture-in-picture, notification channels, and more

Thursday, November 2nd, 2017

Pocket Casts, one of our favorite podcasting apps on Android and my personal go-to for the last four years, has received a nice update to version 6.4 with a bunch of Android Oreo 8.0 features and plenty of fixes.

First on the list of Oreo features are adaptive icons. You can see the "rounded square" shape in the image at the top of the post, but Pocket Casts' icon lends itself well to the other shapes too.

We've already got notification dots and free access to the Pixel-style features of the app. Now, Action Launcher v28 (previously in beta) is rolling out with support for a new companion app—an icon pack. This isn't just any icon pack, though. It's all adaptive icons.

Nova Launcher beta 5.5 finally brings adaptive icons support

Sunday, September 10th, 2017

One thing's sure, TeslaCoil Software is incredibly prolific. Hot on the heels of the recent Sesame Shorcuts, Nova Launcher has just added one more awesome feature: adaptive icons. V5.5-beta1 of the popular launcher allows those of us still waiting for Android 8.0 Oreo to enjoy a little taste of adaptive icons a bit early.

There are a few caveats. You'll need to be running Android Lolipop 5.0 or later, and some icons use assets that will specifically require Android Nougat 7.0+.

Allo’s in-chat translation feature is rolling out to everybody, v18 also brings adaptive icons [APK Download]

Thursday, September 7th, 2017

Language is officially no longer a barrier for Allo users, message translation is now rolling out to users everywhere. First discovered back in July with a teardown of v14, translation can be done by long-pressing a message and tapping the Google Translate icon appearing in the title bar at the top. You can also hide the translation with another long-press and a tap on an undo icon.

Translation doesn't require Allo v18, which just began rolling out today, it works at least as far back as v17.
