Acer Chromebox CXI3 review: The ultimate Chrome OS desktop

Thursday, July 12th, 2018

Chrome OS has always been designed with low-power laptops in mind. There have been a few desktop machines over the years, like the ASUS Chromebit and LG Chromebase, but they're vastly outnumbered by Chromebooks. Seemingly out of nowhere, several companies announced new Chrome OS desktops at CES earlier this year - all of which are capable of running Android apps.

Acer's new desktop is the 'Chromebox CXI3,' which went on sale back in April.

8 of our favorite tech deals this week: Chromebooks, cheap Pixels, free music, and more

Saturday, July 7th, 2018

It was just Independence Day in the States, and normally a holiday week threatens to be a slow period for tech news. But even with workers taking a few days off, the discounts and sales have shown no sign of slowing down, and this week we've got a bumper crop of offers for you to peruse.

Dell Black Friday in July: Deep discounts

OK, let's be real: The whole idea of Black Friday in July is some serious capitalist overreach, inventing a derivative shopping holiday spawned from another made-up shopping holiday.

[Deal Alert] Grab an Acer Chromebook 14 for Work for $180 ($120 off)

Friday, July 6th, 2018

If you're in the market for an affordable laptop, odds are you've already considered a Chromebook. You may even have considered this one: the Acer Chromebook 14 for Work, with its $300 MSRP, is already fine deal. Now, though, it's on sale at BJ's Wholesale Club for $179.99, a whopping $120 off.

While the 14 may not be the sexiest Chromebook in town — it's no Pixelbook — it's perfectly serviceable for lighter tasks like typing and tooling around social media with four gigs of RAM, a USB-C port for charging, data, and video output, and Play Store access.

Acer Chromebook Spin 11 (2018) review: Costs too much for what you get

Friday, June 22nd, 2018

Chromebooks now spread across a wide range of price points. You have the ultra-premium Pixelbook, complete with a really high cost, and mid-range options like the Samsung Chromebook Pro. Then you have the budget models — it's still surprising to me that you can pick up a functional laptop that does most everything that a normal person needs for a few hundred bucks.

Acer is one of the dominant players in the lower-end space, typically offering solid machines for very attractive prices.

Acer Chromebook 13 and Spin 13 may be first Chromebooks to ship with day-1 Linux app support

Tuesday, June 12th, 2018

Google revealed Linux app support for Chromebooks at this year's I/O conference, but at the time the only supported device was the first-party Pixelbook. The 2nd device to get the feature was Samsung's ARM-powered Chromebook Plus, and other recently released devices Like HP's Chromebook x2 haven't had Linux app support at all. But, if a recent commit is any indicator, Acer's Chromebook 13 and Chromebook Spin 13 may be the first Chromebooks to run Linux apps from day 1, no update necessary.

Acer has made several noteworthy Chromebooks as of late. The company's 15" model from last year was well-received, and the new 2018 Chromebook 11 is a decent product. Acer also manufactured the first Chrome OS tablet, but it's not widely available to consumers. Now the company has announced four new Chromebooks: two 13-inch models, and two 15-inch ones.
