Ricoh Theta V 4K 360-degree camera drops to $350 ($81 off) on Amazon

Wednesday, January 16th, 2019

Despite being quite the niche product category, 360-degree cameras have some loyal proponents touting their utility. If you're serious at this particular element of photography, then you've probably heard of Ricoh's Theta line. And right now, you can grab a Theta V 4K for $349.99 on Amazon.

Though not something I find myself interested in per se, I've used an older model of the Ricoh Theta. It was a pretty seamless experience – albeit with slow transfer and processing rates – whether I was controlling the camera itself or via the Android app.

The Xiaomi Mi Box S 4K streaming player is down to just $40 at Walmart

Saturday, December 8th, 2018

Xiaomi's Mi Box S is already an almost-too-good-to-be-true bargain. For less than the price of a Chromecast Ultra, you get 4K, HDR streaming apps on your TV — and it works as a Chromecast receiver. The streaming box was down to $50 last month, and now it's even cheaper: just 40 bucks.

A cheap Android TV box is one of the best ways to get smarts to your non-smart TV (they do still exist), or to upgrade the terrible apps that came pre-loaded on a smart TV that's smart only in name.

Google Play Movies & TV will upgrade movies to 4K for free

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018

Google has announced a couple of significant changes to Play Movies & TV that will have a considerable impact on owners of 4K televisions. Starting today, some previously-purchased movies will automatically be upgraded to 4K quality once it's available. The price of newly-purchased 4K content on the platform is also going down.

We saw signs these changes were coming last week. Movies "from participating Hollywood studios" — that's Fox, Lionsgate, NBC Universal, Sony, and Warner Bros — purchased in SD or HD quality will be available to stream in 4K as soon as that quality is available.

[Update: Added sorting] Google Play Movies v4.8 prepares to enable 4K upgrades, likely making them free [APK Teardown]

Thursday, October 18th, 2018

Google added 4K movies to its library back in late 2016, following the launch of the Chromecast Ultra. Since then, many people — myself included — came to realize that there was one big oversight: It's not possible to upgrade your existing HD movies to 4K. There was no upgrade pricing or even an option to remove a movie from your account and then purchase it again in 4K at full price.

Roku Premiere is now available, offering 4K streaming for $40

Monday, October 8th, 2018

The streaming hardware industry is a highly competitive place. No sooner had Roku introduced its Premiere 4K player in late September for a market-beating $40, Amazon introduced the Fire Stick 4K for a mere $10 more, with support for all three major HDR standards (HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision) plus Dolby Atmos for sound. But while the Premiere only offers HDR10 and is a bit bigger than a streaming stick, many prefer its user interface and remote design.

Tuesday, September 18th, 2018

You can swing by Amazon's website any old day and purchase a Fire TV Stick for $40, but that's just the 1080p version. The 4K-compatible Fire usually costs $70. That's not the case today. Amazon Prime subscribers can get $30 off the 4K Fire TV right now.

The 4K Fire TV is a bit larger than the 1080p Fire TV Stick, but it still just dangles behind your TV. It runs Fire OS, so you have access to Alexa and all the usual Amazon content.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium review: A Sony vanity project and nothing more

Tuesday, July 31st, 2018

There was a time not that many years ago when Sony was trusted implicitly by consumers all over the world. You knew if you bought a Sony product, you were getting the best, and people were willing to pay more for that peace of mind. However, Sony has struggled to find its place in today's hyper-competitive world, particularly when it comes to smartphones. Sony makes phones that are good in some ways, but the issues often outweigh the strengths.

[Deal Alert] Roku Ultra is $79.99 ($20 off) at Amazon and Best Buy
