Essential’s 360 Camera is on sale for $24 with free case

Wednesday, December 19th, 2018

Look, Essential has been trying to sell you phones and 360-degree cameras for like a year. The original price was a little high, but it's been discounting them over and over, and there are still some left. For a limited time, you can get the Essential 360 Camera for just $24. This device cost a whopping $200 at launch.

The 360 Camera accessory docks to the back of your Essential Phone, pulling power from the pin contacts.

Insta360 One X review: A luxury 360-degree action camera worth the splurge

Tuesday, December 18th, 2018

Depending on the tech circle you're in, 360 cameras may either be the most superfluous fad or the coolest thing. I used to be in the former camp and my LG 360 Cam collected dust in a drawer for years, but over the past months, I've found a new appreciation for the product category. It's partly thanks to the number of cool "tiny planet" creators I follow on Instagram, but most importantly, it's because of a shift in my understanding of what a 360-degree camera can do.

Insta360 announces the ONE X: 360-degree 5.7K action camera for $400

Wednesday, October 10th, 2018

For most people, 360-degree cameras are a novelty item that they're willing to spend a maximum of $100 on, just to see what the fuss is about. That nets them a low-resolution, low-quality sensor, with limited features. For those who get bitten by the 360-degree bug though, a cheap camera won't do. The higher-resolution and more specs, the better. And that's where the new Insta360 ONE X lands. It's capable of taking 5.7K videos and comes with built-in stabilization, for an awesome shoot-now-edit-later approach.

Ricoh Theta V review: The DSLR of 360-degree cameras

Sunday, September 23rd, 2018

There is no shortage of portable 360-degree cameras. The most well-known in our circles is Samsung's Gear 360, but that only works with Samsung phones and iOS. Insta360's 'ONE' and 'Nano' cameras are also popular, though the latter only works with select iPhone models.

If price is no object, one of the leading devices in this category has been Ricoh's Theta V camera. It's tiny, but it packs a 4K sensor and the ability to record surround-sound audio (with a separate module).

Check out what one guy did with a 360-degree camera and some steel wool

Monday, August 13th, 2018

Up until today, I knew steel wool only as something used for polishing/cleaning, but it's apparently pretty good for 360-degree photos, too. The r/pics subreddit is often filled with things that would better fit some other subreddits, but this photo from /u/mohair69 is a prime example of something that belongs there.

As a recap for those of you who may have been as oblivious to steel wool's photographic effects as I was, this effect is achieved simply by swinging a ball of steel wool, lit with a lighter or battery, attached to a whisk or something similar.

[Deal Alert] Essential Phone being offered with free Earphones HD, 360 Camera, and camera case for $399

Saturday, August 4th, 2018

The Essential Phone has seen some pretty crazy deals over the past few months, but the best one we saw came last month during Prime Day. Ricoh Plug-in Store for Theta V 360-degree camera is now live

Monday, July 23rd, 2018

Ricoh isn't too well-known in the consumer electronics space as it mostly sells B2B office IT services, so it may have been surprising to see it come out with an impressively-specced 360-degree camera. It released the Theta V camera in September last year, offering spherical 4K recording plus "surround-sound" audio in a surprisingly compact device. Back in January, Ricoh announced a partner program to develop plug-ins for the Theta V, and that project is now bearing fruit.

The Essential Phone and 360 Camera are in demand around the world — according to Essential. So the company is responding by selling its phone and accessories directly to consumers in Canada, the UK, France, Germany, and Japan. If you live in one of those five countries, it's time to get mildly excited.

Consumers in those newly added countries can now go to Essential.com to start an order, though the company notes there are some special terms and conditions in tow.

[Deal Alert] Samsung Gear 360 (2017) is $115 on Amazon (50% off MSRP) or $113 from third-party sellers

Wednesday, April 18th, 2018

Phones these days have replaced many of the most commonly used portable appliances from the late 20th century. It's pretty incredible how something that's small enough to fit in your pocket has, for the most part, replaced cameras, camcorders, radios, paper maps, GPS devices, voice recorders, newspapers, credit cards — really, the list just goes on and on. However, 360-degree video cameras are not on that list, so if you aspire to shoot some quality 360-degree video, you'll need to purchase a separate device.
